Job overviewAs a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist at Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, you will be responsible for ensuring that our service users' needs are met through the delivery of high-quality care. You will lead the inpatient multi-disciplinary team at Dunes ward, providing clinical care to older adults who require specialist inpatient care.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder will be responsible for completing assessments and formulating treatment plans for service users admitted to Dunes ward. You will manage patients detained under the Mental Health Act, requiring sound knowledge of Mental Health Act law, including documentation and capacity assessments.
You will lead the multidisciplinary team at Dunes ward, fostering positive working relationships and morale among ward staff. Responsibilities include conducting ward rounds, providing clear communication regarding assessments and management plans, and offering leadership and training to trainee doctors and medical students.

Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesYou will conduct regular reviews of inpatients, operating within multi-disciplinary integrated teams, and liaise closely with Social Services for safe discharge planning. You will manage the overall assessment, management, and safe discharge planning of inpatients on Dunes ward.
Person specification Registration- Full registration with General Medical Council
- Inclusion on or eligible for the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council or within 6 months of CCST/CCT in Old Age Psychiatry at the date of interview
- Section 12 (2) Approval + Approved Clinician Status or ability to gain approval
- In good standing with GMC
- Valid UK driving licence and ability to use own car for work-related travel or provide evidence of alternative
- MbChb, MBBS or equivalent
- Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent, with 3 years higher training in Old Age Psychiatry
- Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management
- Excellent clinical knowledge in specialty
- Excellent clinical skills using a bio-psycho-social perspective
- Excellent communication skills in English
- Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
- Experience in similar roles
- Knowledge and use of IT systems
- Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
