Position Summary
Why join our team?
Part of a small team dedicated to Samsung's fast-growing (and even faster-paced) European Services Business Office ("ESBO") business unit, you will provide legal services (contracting, regulatory advice, general advice etc.) across the whole spectrum of media law - including channel & content licensing, app distribution, ad-tech, advertising, mobile, gaming - and more!
ESBO operates across all of Europe, so you will be dealing with colleagues and counterparties all across the continent, as well as in the UK.
Role and Responsibilities
Your key responsibilities
- Draft and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts (and associated documentation) relating to the various ESBO business activities (e.g. channel & content licensing agreements, app distribution agreements, SSP agreements, annual-spend agreements with agencies etc.);
- Provide advice navigating legal and regulatory risk, particularly in the targeted advertising, streaming, and app distribution space;
- Provide support to the European subsidiary legal teams by drafting pan-EU contracts for the procurement of services / to facilitate key projects / engagements;
- Collaborate with colleagues across the EO Legal team (including the general commercial, competition and consumer, and data protection, teams) and the business (e.g. Sales, Finance, Tax, BizOps, Business Development/Partnerships etc.);
- Help to develop, understand and implement risk mitigation strategies for contractual, regulatory and business risk;
- Enhance and maintain effective contract processes, our contract management system and precedent agreements (including end user documents - e.g. playbooks, FAQs, guides etc.);
- Liaise with and instruct various external law firms and specialists with whom we work;
- Represent Samsung in external meetings; and
- Actively give to your own development and to the development of the lawyers and paralegals with the EO Legal team.
What we need for this role
- You get things done quickly - and have an ability to jump between different tasks and topics at pace. You see yourself as a true business partner, and not as part of a legal "no" function.
- You are patient, pragmatic, flexible and detail focused. You are culturally aware and able to communicate legal issues in clear and concise terms that are easily understood. You work under your own initiative and are a key enabler of the ESBO business unit achieving its objectives and targets.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation and issue-spotting skills are required. You need to be able to work / connect with, influence and provide guidance to individuals at all levels of the organisation (including very senior team members).
- You must be a qualified solicitor in the UK or similar jurisdiction, e.g. Australia. The role would suit candidates with circa 3-4 years PQE, although all candidates with proven experience are encouraged to apply.
- Experience within content & channel licensing, advertising and media (both contracts and regulatory experience), as well as a thorough understanding of GDPR (and associated privacy related issues), are highly desired.
- Past experience in-house (including by secondment) is preferred, though not technically necessary.
What does success look like?
- In the first year, you will proactively engage with and build close relationships with all of our key collaborators in ESBO. This includes developing and improving upon existing ways of working with each ESBO team - streamlining processes, drafting templates, successfully reporting on our team's successes etc.
- You will get going quickly - from day 1 leading on, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts for ESBO, together with providing first class legal advice.
- You will successfully delegate work to, supervise and train junior members of the team (particularly on legal risks pertaining to media and broadcasting).
- You will collaborate with the wider EO Legal team, and present at team meetings on exciting matters you are working on and/or topics relevant to ESBO.
- You will regularly seek feedback from your peers and stakeholders, and act on the same.
- You will be a true business partner, helping ESBO to meet its targets/business objectives (and celebrating the wins along the way!).
The interview process
There will be two main stages of the interview process (and possibly a third depending on how stages one and two go).
In the first interview, you will meet with the hiring manager and a member of the ESBO team, who will ask you a series of questions about yourself / why you want to work for Samsung (this may include some behavioural questions).
The second interview, will be with the hiring manager again and a member of the HR team, and will be asked to share your thoughts on a technical exercise that will be provided in advance. The technical exercise will include real examples of the types of work we do for ESBO. We may also ask you some additional questions about yourself which may include some behavioural questions.
