About the role
You'll be accountable for the vision, strategy, discovery and delivery of a Platform squad, working with your Engineering and UCD counterparts. You'll be building a long-standing, high-performing product team that can work on a range of different problems - initially focused on transforming our publishing platforms and infrastructure to be more flexible, resilient and capable of powering innovative digital products and services that achieve customer and company goals. You'll balance user needs and business outcomes to create an evidence-based approach to helping our users - so that we can attract and retain subscribers, create new partnerships, increase revenues, and thereby continue to fund our important charitable work standing up for UK Consumers.
As a Senior Product Manager, you'll be working on some of our more complex problem areas, where there may be no clear solution - or maybe countless solutions to be reconciled. You may be working on a new problem using discovery techniques or leading a tiger team to solve a hot topic, while also keeping the majority of your squad working efficiently on their core work. You'll be creating a range of longer-term plans, and thinking about the evidence you - and your stakeholders - will need to help choose between them.
You may also be working with suppliers or partners, scoping work and setting up relationships for long-term success - without losing our ability to test and learn.
Key responsibilities include:
- Working with stakeholders to understand business opportunities and context, to ensure work is driving the right impact
- Developing a deep understanding of users - their perspectives, priorities, journeys and problems in your product area
- Leading different types of discovery, analysis and research work to find a great solution to problems, or uncover new valuable opportunities
- Appropriately planning your agile delivery approach, in collaboration with colleagues from Engineering and UCD
- Understanding the principles, concerns and trade-offs inherent in engineering & architectural decision making around technical infrastructure and publishing platforms
- Developing a lasting trusted partnership and long-term alignment with stakeholders around your product vision, strategy and roadmap
- Managing the backlog and writing user stories that help your squad to work effectively in delivering high quality valuable software that solves user and business problems
- Collaborating with other disciplines to set up, monitor, evaluate and use the right metrics to measure the performance of your squad's output, in order to help guide future decisions
- Proactively investigating data and metrics to help inform your priorities
- Managing dependencies and collaborating with other squads on shared outcomes
- Working with leadership and your squad on OKRs for the current and future quarters
- Creating and continually improving a high-performing team
- Effectively leading work at multiple stages of the delivery lifecycle
- Communicating and escalating risks, and using check-ins to involve stakeholders in the most important decisions.
- Being responsible for the coordination of a squad's contribution to incident preparedness and resolution, and collaborating with peers to ensure clear communication to stakeholders.
About you:
- Experienced senior product manager that has worked in a range of contexts or parts of the product lifecycle, using modern discovery, delivery, and operations approaches
- Proven experience in planning, prioritising and iteratively delivering valuable outcomes - for users and the organisation
- Experience of using data to shape customer experiences; this ranges from strategic analysis to determine ROI on opportunities, through analytics and A/B testing, and to driving personalisation at scale
- Proven experience in sharing perspectives between engineering and editorial teams to create new solutions that work
- Successfully identifying and testing the most important assumptions about user behaviour and technical solutions, to manage risk, build trust through evidence, and ensure a regular rhythm of successful delivery
- Successfully led a multidisciplinary team to improve their own practices into being high-performing, healthy, and regularly delivering small increments of value
- Demonstrable ability to approach technical incidents with a considered approach, ensuring non-technical colleagues understand situations and ensuring communication is clear, regular and focused.
