Mechanical Design Engineer
AWE is currently recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to work within the Trials, Experiments & Technology Development sub-function. This covers many roles across two of our delivery areas. The successful candidate will work on a variety of challenging design and capability projects to meet the needs of engineering Trials & Experiments as well the delivery unit's research and Technology Development goals.
Location - Reading/Basingstoke area
Package: £42,650 - £58,000 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

Let us introduce the role
Depending on experience, the successful candidate will also be supported to undertake assessment by the Design Authority to be accountable for ensuring the technical solutions developed meet the high standards of operational safety, performance and our customers' requirements. This is a delivery focused role, so a track record of delivery and the ability to communicate with a range of stakeholders across the business is imperative.
Ideal Candidates will have the following skills, experience, and behaviours:
- Degree level qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Contributing to the conceptual design, detail design, manufacture, assembly, and test of equipment.
- Contributing to the production and delivery of technical documents, reports, and presentations including specifications, design reviews, operational documents, and validation evidence for the engineering solutions.
- Identifying and supporting opportunities for cost savings, efficiency, and business improvement.
- Providing support to Senior Engineers in scoping, planning, and estimating future activities.
- Proven track record of planning and delivering complex programmes of work.
- Accomplished in the analysis and reporting of key performance indicators.
Whilst not to be considered a check list, candidates should be able to demonstrate some of the following:
- Experience of adeptly managing and influencing a wide range of senior stakeholders.
- Skilled in facilitating others to think strategically.
- Practical engineering experience, ideally combined with the use and knowledge of machine tools.
- A good understanding of mechanical engineering theory and practice, with a broad knowledge of engineering design and manufacture.
- Design experience of machinery/mechanisms - Ideally supported by experience working with optical systems and/or vacuum technology.
- Experience of 3D modelling and detail drafting including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing - ideally using Siemens NX (training will be given when necessary).
- Experience of managing small engineering projects and delivering to Quality, Time, and Cost.
- Experience of managing budgets with proven commercial awareness.
- A good knowledge of Quality Systems in a highly regulated industry.
- Good interpersonal skills, ability to work independently but also within a team, supporting colleagues to achieve the teams' goals.
- Already have or working towards professional registration at IENG level with the IMECHE or equivalent.
- Strong communication skills (written and oral).
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
You'll need to have the ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority changing environment and be able to manage your own workload. You will also have initiative, enthusiasm, a flexible approach, and ability to work to tight deadlines.

Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE Aldermaston.
