Job Description
Overview

Advanced Practice Providers (APP), a nurse practitioner (NP) or a physician assistant (PA), will function as clinical providers in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine. The APP will participate in all aspects of patient care, supporting roles of consultant and educator as indicated. The clinical practice will focus on the provision of primary care to all types of patients. Nursing and medicine must maintain ongoing collaboration in education and practice to effectively meet the primary health-care needs of all patients. The practitioner must engage in independent as well as cooperative decision-making and function in collaboration with qualified physicians within the framework of jointly approved guidelines. Practitioners must be prepared and competent to apply additional knowledge and skills, and be ready to accept responsibility and accountability for their practice. Primary care is provided at all levels of the health-care system, predominantly in an ambulatory setting.

Responsibilities
  1. Independently assess, diagnose, and develop treatment plans for patients in the area of Primary Care in accordance with protocols and standards of care.
  2. Promote a schedule of health promotion examinations and interventions in our patient population.
  3. Obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications under a collaborative practice agreement.
  4. Differentiates between normal and abnormal findings and orders appropriate diagnostic studies.
  5. Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families.
  6. Document patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate outgoing correspondence.
  7. Be familiar with documentation requirements to ensure proper billing.
  8. Initiate and coordinate referrals to other health care team members or agencies.
  9. Serve as a consultative resource to nursing staff.
  10. Participate in the development, utilization, and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs.
  11. Provide education to external agencies, community, and other health professionals.
  12. Participate in the development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
  13. Monitor task module of the electronic health record to ensure timely response.
  14. Responsible for administrative activities and special projects as assigned.
  15. Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals.
  16. Participate and contribute to activities that enhance clinical expertise and nursing knowledge.
  17. Participate in professional nursing activities in the division, community, and professional organizations.
  18. Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, residents, and the public.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Nurse Practitioners must have MSN and must be a licensed RN by the Virginia Board of Nursing and a certified Nurse Practitioner.
  • Physician Assistants must have an MPA and be a licensed Physician Assistant within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Prior experience preferably in a human services-related field, such as social work, psychology, nursing, counseling, health sciences, or education required. Twelve hours of counseling education in HIV is required annually. Ongoing training on changes in benefits programs such as ACA, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security is also required annually.

EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in a human services-related field, such as social work, psychology, counseling, health sciences, or education required.
  • Schedule II prescriptive eligibility.
  • Knowledge of or experience working with persons with sickle cell disease, chronic pain management, and cardiovascular disease is preferred.
  • Intermediate knowledge of and experience with personal computers.
  • Intermediate word processing skills required.
