Assistant Farm Manager/Operations Manager

Location: Crondall, Hampshire GU10 5DT

Purpose of the role: The main focus of the role is to support the owner with the running of the home and surrounding farms.

GL Porter & Son is a family run business farming 8,000 acres that has recently taken on an additional 2,500 acres of new land based elsewhere in Hampshire and are looking for someone to oversee the established team as a manager. Predominantly crops there are also sheep and cows within the enterprise.

Responsibilities would include:

• Supervising, guiding and motivating the farm team.
• Relief farm work such as spraying and livestock checking.
• Responsible for Stewardship implementation and record keeping.
• To have an understanding of grants and their conditions, being able to apply and follow the applications through.
• To check crops regularly and liaise with agronomists and sprayer operators.
• To maintain grain store records.
• To have a knowledge of mapping including yields, weeds and gross margins
• To help with trials.
• Using Omnia to ensure best crop margins.
• Manage the machinery list and maintenance schedule - and arrange maintenance and repair of farm buildings, machinery and equipment as required.
• Ensure that farm activities are compliant with the relevant regulations and standards for Red tractor assurance etc
• To be involved in preparing and working to budgets and cashflow.
• To implement new ideas and come up with ideas to drive the business forward.

Qualities we are looking for:

• Experience in modern farming methods.
• Ability to use initiative in decision making and problem solving.
• Full driving license.
• To be IT confident.
• Good communication skills with the team at all levels and with external suppliers and contractors.

It is hoped the candidate will have most relevant qualifications, but training can be provided should it be necessary. GL Porter have recently moved from Gatekeeper to Omnia. Agriwebb is used for recording livestock and up to date John Deere green star technology on their tractors.

Ultimately GL Porter & Son are looking for someone to help continue to build the company into a profitable, resilient farming business utilising the principles of conservation agriculture whilst considering the environment.
