Duration: 6 Months (Extensions Available - Long Term Opportunity)

Location: Heathrow Airport - Hybrid - Work Your Way is our approach to flexible working - this is available from day 1 of joining and part-time hours will also be considered.

Day Rate: £600 P/Day - Inside IR35 - Umbrella

Job Description

This role is for a design engineer to work on the Heathrow Airport Information and Control Systems (ICS) Projects. The role will be based at Heathrow Airport 3-5 days a week as the project dictates. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and implementation of structured cabling systems within various construction projects. This role requires a strong understanding of construction methodologies, CDM regulations, and the ability to effectively sequence works. The candidate will be responsible for the design of network solutions involving networking vendor products, cable infrastructure, cabinet designs, and AutoCAD drawings. Detailed knowledge of cabling and physical infrastructure standards is required to ensure adherence to all Fujitsu's designs. The project involves large-scale construction work at the airport, and adherence to relevant Health and Safety requirements is paramount.

By leveraging innovative technologies, you will help airports reduce their environmental impact while ensuring seamless connectivity and reliable communication.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Design of solutions involving network products (e.g., Cisco, Nokia, OTN), Cabling Infrastructure Design and Implementation.
  • Develop and implement structured cabling systems, including:
    • Fiber optic cabling (single-mode and multi-mode).
    • Copper cabling (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a).
    • Patch panels, cable management trays, racks, and cabinets.
  • Ensure all designs comply with international standards such as TIA-568, ISO/IEC 11801, and BS EN 50173.

Core Activities:

  • Prepare detailed design specifications, drawings, and documentation in accordance with industry best practices and client requirements.
  • Design and develop detailed structured cabling system designs for new build and refurbishment projects, voice, data, low-voltage applications, fiber and CAT cabling (e.g., CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A, CAT7, CAT8).
  • Develop cable schedules, bill of materials, and cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and construction teams to ensure seamless integration of the cabling infrastructure.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate potential risks associated with the cabling infrastructure.
  • Conduct site surveys to assess existing infrastructure and identify cabling requirements.
  • Extract and analyze airport survey and existing design data and recommend improvements/corrections.
  • Prepare and present technical reports and presentations.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, and subcontractors to resolve design and installation issues.
  • Ensure design compliance with all relevant regulations, including CDM 2015, Building Regulations, and industry standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 1180, TIA/EIA, BICSI, and IEEE).
  • Aware of Health and Safety requirements for designs e.g., CDM and fully complies with requirements for working on construction sites.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in structured cabling design within a construction environment.
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing fiber optic and copper cabling systems.
  • Thorough understanding of CDM 2015 regulations and their application within construction projects.
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant industry standards and best practices.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and other relevant design software (e.g., Revit, BIM software).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Clear knowledge and experience of managing the design lifecycle from initial analysis through to final testing and customer handover.

Technical Experience

  • Cabling and Physical Infrastructure design.
  • Preferably has experience of Heathrow and airport equipment, systems, processes, and design requirements.
  • Preferably has knowledge of network infrastructure and elements, particularly Cisco access and distribution layer products Wireless, Radio, and Voice networks.
  • Preferably has experience of producing Infrastructure CAD drawings to Heathrow standards. Not required for all roles.
