Job Description
Clinical Fellow in Kidney Transplant and Vascular Access Surgery

The posts will suit applicants who wish to gain extensive experience in renal transplantation and vascular access surgery. Previous experience in General and Vascular Surgery is advantageous.

You will be providing the highest quality care to one of the largest dialysis and transplant cohorts in the UK under the direct supervision of a team of highly motivated consultant surgeons.

The appointee will be exposed to all aspects of advanced dialysis access and transplant surgery and the relevant medical management of these complex patients on a 1:5 on-call rota. This post is EWTD compliant.

The unit performs an average of 200 renal transplants and more than 500 dialysis access procedures per year (including HeRO graft, extra-anatomical PTFE graft, EndoAVF, and IVUS plasty) with a large live donor transplant programme that includes HLA and ABO incompatible transplantation.

These posts will be especially suited to international fellows or as secondments, who want to gain experience in routine and highly complex transplant and vascular access surgery.

There is an active research programme in transplant immunology, basic science, negative pressure wound therapy, and qualitative research in improving patient experience and outcomes. The appointees will be encouraged and expected to participate in it and publish their work.

Main Duties of the Job

General duties will provide wide exposure to all parts of the renal transplant and dialysis access training including:

  1. At least once daily ward round with the consultant surgeon and nephrologist
  2. Clinic reviews
  3. Pre-transplant assessments
  4. Post-transplant acute clinics
  5. Dialysis (PD and vascular) access clinics
  6. Pre-assessments clinic
  7. Regular theatre sessions (5-day operating sessions)
  8. Elective living donor transplants
  9. Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy
  10. Hand-assisted transperitoneal, retroperitoneal donor nephrectomy
  11. Laparoscopic/Percutaneous/Robotic Peritoneal dialysis catheter insertions
  12. Robotic living donor transplants
  13. Complex vascular access
  14. Complex abdominal wall hernia service (joint procedures with plastic surgery team for pedicle flaps)
  15. Renovascular reconstruction with auto-transplantation
  16. Elective general surgery for dialysis and transplant population (including laparoscopic hernias, cholecystectomy)
  17. Emergency deceased donor transplants
  18. Emergency surgical vascular access salvage surgery

Person Specification Qualifications
  • MB BS, or equivalent
  • MRCS/FRCS or equivalent
  • MD/PhD
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of basic vascular access surgery
  • Knowledge of all aspects of renal transplantation
  • Publication in this area
Training Expected
  • Training in general surgery/vascular surgery
  • Experience in training undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Previous exposure in renal transplant and vascular access surgery
Audit Experience
  • Able to provide evidence of clinical audit and demonstrate understanding of impact and challenges this brings.
  • Experience of audit management
Academic Achievements
  • Ability to demonstrate personal experience of clinical research and describe and discuss findings and impact.
  • Experience of research, presentations to learned societies on topics related to surgery
  • Demonstrate number of publications in indexed journals, over a variety of subjects relevant to this post.
  • PhD/MD Thesis

  • Excellent presentational and verbal skills, ability to motivate and develop medical trainees, awareness of best practice through evidence-based medicine, and personal drive to enact change with the team
