Clinical Research Fellow- Gastroenterology

Post: CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOW GASTROENTEROLOGY

Base: Glasgow Royal Infirmary

Applications are invited for the above post in Gastroenterology Medicine, based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI). This post will commence from February 2025 and is outside the MTAS process.

The North Sector Gastroenterology Service has been a leader in developing and introducing new initiatives, particularly in the areas of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, benign dysphagia, non-cardiac chest pain, management of chronic viral hepatitis, liver disorders, upper GI haemorrhage and inflammatory bowel disease. There are on-site Specialist Upper GI, pancreaticobiliary and Colorectal Surgery Units. As part of the acute services review in Glasgow, the units at GRI and Stobhill Hospital in the North East Glasgow sector have amalgamated, and Gastroenterology outpatient services are provided across both sites with inpatient services concentrated at GRI.

There is a strong tradition within the unit of clinical and basic scientific research; our active clinical research program has an expanding portfolio of activity with interests in several areas including inflammatory bowel disease, dyspepsia, chronic liver disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, patient experiences of endoscopy, complications of endoscopy and response to treatment of chronic HCV. Other research activities include participation in multi-centre trials, both commercial and non-commercial. This new post has been developed to offer research opportunities and training in Gastroenterology. Clinical duties will include participation in the gastroenterology service, outpatient work, and general medical on-call.

Candidates should be in possession of MRCP (UK) or equivalent and have appropriate experience in Gastroenterology, although these are not essential requirements and training will be provided in post. Applicants should be planning to continue in a career in Gastroenterology or a related specialty. The successful candidate will have a major contribution to the state-of-the-art Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at GRI, which opened in 2012, working closely with the CRF nursing team to deliver our GI portfolio of research studies.

We would welcome applications from doctors at level CMT2/ST2 or above looking for a 1-year research break to consolidate their training, or from senior Gastroenterology trainees considering a pre or post-CCT senior fellowship with subspecialty training.

The post-holder will also be given the opportunity to undertake a period of supervised clinical research, and we would anticipate the successful applicant undertaking higher research at the University of Glasgow.
