Job overview

We are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking Acute Medicine Consultant to join our multi-disciplinary team at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to work across two leading sites within UHSussex Trust, providing exceptional care to acutely unwell patients and contributing to the development of innovative medical services.

This role offers the chance to make a real impact within two key hospitals while working in the vibrant and diverse communities of Brighton and Haywards Heath. If you are passionate about acute medicine and are ready for a new challenge, we would love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide clinical expertise in the management of acutely unwell patients with Medical Assessment Units, and Same Day Emergency Care settings.
  • Lead multidisciplinary ward rounds, ensuring timely assessments and management of medical admissions.
  • Actively participate in the development and delivery of patient-centered care pathways to optimise patient flow and reduce length of stay.
  • Supervise and support junior medical staff, fostering an environment of learning and development.
  • Contribute to the acute take rota across both sites, ensuring seamless and consistent medical cover.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities, including audits, quality improvement projects, and morbidity and mortality reviews.
  • Engage in the training and education of medical students and trainees.

Your uniqueness and experiences will be part of our creative and innovative community where everyone is encouraged to succeed. We have a range of Staff Networks to help break down barriers, and can offer a buddy to help new members settle in. We're proud to be a Disability Confident Employer (Level 2) and a Veteran Aware Trust.

We treat our patients and staff with the same compassion and empathy we expect for ourselves. We're here for them when they need us, and we go above and beyond to meet their needs. This can be seen in our Wellbeing Programme for staff which is extensive and designed to support you when you need it, including where possible, flexible working to support work life balance - because we know that to look after others we must first look after ourselves.

As a university trust and a leader in healthcare research, we value learning, teaching and training so that we can be the best that we can be. From the moment you start with us and throughout your career we will help you to grow and develop. We hope that in choosing UHSussex you are choosing a long and happy career where you will be able to see the difference you make and feel valued for all that you do.

We look forward to receiving your application and the start of your journey with UHSussex.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The acute medical unit at PRH is Balcombe Ward, staffed by members of the Acute Medicine department in rotation, and with its own dedicated junior staff. The unit comprises 21 beds and has one additional trolley bay for medical assessments. Two thirds of the activity happen on the adjacent same day emergency care unit (RAMU). The standard operating procedures and the expectations around consultant-delivered care are the same as on the RSCH site, although the range of specialties on-site and able to provide in-reach is obviously less than that available on the main campus, but still includes respiratory medicine, diabetes and endocrinology, and frailty. Gastroenterology and cardiology consultants visit the hospital daily and patients requiring urgent care from these specialties can be transferred quickly to the Brighton campus when needed.

The Royal Sussex County Hospital site in Brighton is a tertiary referral centre. There is a 36-bedded Acute Assessment Unit adjacent to ED, radiology, and the same day emergency care unit (EACU). Acute medicine services operate on this site in a conventional way. However, every effort is made to triage patients to provide acute medical care directly at our Princess Royal site rather than The Royal Sussex County Hospital.
