Job Description
Consultant in Care of the Elderly Medicine Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS FT

This is a great opportunity to work as part of the Care of the Elderly service, which sits within the Division of Medicine.

You will join a team of 5 existing Elderly Medicine Consultants, with a diverse range of sub-specialty areas including post-acute care, delirium, frailty, ortho-geriatrics, movement disorders, and falls.

Main duties of the job
  • Strengthening the delivery of a high quality geriatric service across the hospital.
  • Participation in rehabilitation wards rounds and MDTs.
  • Development of rapid assessment clinics.
  • Forging links between emergency medicine to support admission avoidance schemes for older people.
  • Liaising and developing working policies with relevant hospital departments, local General Practitioners, nurses and paramedical colleagues.
  • Developing innovative practices in clinical patient management, focusing on high quality care and emphasis on links between emergency medicine and Care of the Elderly acute wards where appropriate.
  • Developing the use of nurse practitioners and paramedical colleagues in the hospital.
  • Developing a subspecialty interest.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • You must be on the specialist register for Geriatric Medicine or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of Doctors must be eligible to be on the GMC specialist register (evidence required prior to commencement) to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee.
  • Applicants must continue to hold a Licence to Practise.
Personal Qualities
  • Ability to use IT Systems - inc Word, Excel, PowerPoint Outlook.
  • Evidence of innovation.
  • Evidence of continual learning and development.
  • Understands self (strengths and weaknesses) and impact of behaviour on others.
  • Access to own transport.
Experience and Achievements
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of geriatric medicine.
  • Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinions on range of problems within the specialty.
  • Attendance at a recognised management course.
  • Wide based experience in General Medicine.
Teaching and Training
  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
  • Training in clinical and educational supervision.
  • Attendance at a teaching course.
  • Formal qualification in teaching/education.
  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications.
Audit and Research
  • Knowledge of Audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects and the implementation of outcomes.
  • Critical Appraisal Skills.
  • Evidence of knowledge of research methodology.
General
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Ability to work in various locations throughout the network of services provided by Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching NHS Foundation Trust.
  • An enhanced DBS disclosure will be required with the Disclosure and Barring Service.
