Consultant in Medical Oncology with interest In Melanoma and Acute Oncology
A substantive consultant post, less than full time (8PA) Consultant in Medical Oncology with interest In Melanoma and Acute Oncology within the Department of Oncology at St George's Hospital. The post-holder will work closely with Dr Alberto Fusi, Consultant Medical Oncologist. The post-holder's mentor will be Dr Alberto Fusi to help integrate into St George's Healthcare, particularly important if he/she is a new consultant transitioning from Specialist Trainee status. Mentorship meetings will occur monthly and will be shared with Dr Jason Chow, Care Group Lead.
This post is being made substantive to secure a permanent input into the medical oncology service for melanoma and AOS, representing an expansion of the current workload reflecting the increased new patient referrals via the skin MDT for treatment of melanoma. This post enables comprehensive consultant cross cover for inpatients and outpatients and promotes further development and delivery of excellent melanoma and AOS services.

Job responsibilitiesSpecific Duties of the Post
- Provide and coordinate the Medical Oncology management of patients with melanoma to ensure best practice is maintained, working closely with Medical Oncology Consultant colleagues and together with Surgeons, Pathologists, Radiologists, and Clinical Oncologists.
- Support and oversee the care of inpatients under the Oncology team.
- Lead the Ambulatory Oncology Unit with the nurse in charge and manage consultant availability and review for nurse-led service.
- Lead the Immunotherapy Toxicity MDT which is held weekly and supported by the Ambulatory Oncology Unit nurse in charge.
- Provide advice on medical oncology aspects of treatment and care for colleagues in other specialties within the department, St Georges Healthcare, and General Practitioners.
- Participate in and support the multidisciplinary oncology team which includes Clinical Oncologists, Surgeons, the relevant junior team, Specialist Nursing Staff, Therapists, Dietician, Social worker, Palliative Care, and Counselling for patients and families.
- Contribute to ongoing research projects using the clinical and/or laboratory facilities available.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings reviewing all relevant histology and radiology.
- Provide leadership and support for the effective development of the Melanoma services discussed within operational policy meetings.
- Contribute to the development of departmental objectives and business plan and manage resources within the approved plan.
- Take an active part in the management and administration of the clinical service.
- Support Core Medical Trainees (and trust grade SHOs) assigned to Oncology and act as coordinator of their teaching within oncology.
- Coordinate a local teaching programme for junior clinicians attached to oncology.
- Act as clinical supervisor to Specialist Registrars and/or Core Medical Trainees in your team.
- Participate in the teaching of Specialist Registrars in Medical Oncology.
- Work within the department to seek ways of improving the efficiency of the service without sacrificing quality.
- Contribute to the risk management of the department and maintain best clinical practice through Clinical Governance.
- Fulfill all timetable commitments.
- Liaise with consultant colleagues in providing internal cover for annual leave and sick leave.
- Participate in medical audit, both procedural and clinical as appropriate.
- Remain committed to the development of professional knowledge and to fulfill Continuing Medical Education and GMC revalidation requirements.
- Partake in the Consultant rota, ensuring 24-hour medical cover to the Oncology Department and the AOS service.
- Participate in teaching medicine to medical students of St Georges Hospital Medical School at regular clinical sessions and provide postgraduate teaching as required.
- Medical degree (A)
- Full registration and license to practice with General Medical Council or eligible if currently working overseas (A)
- Has CC(S)T and on the Special Register for Medical Oncology or eligible for CCT and inclusion on the Specialist Register within 3 months of the interview date (A)
- Higher professional qualification (e.g., MRCP) (A)
- Completion of a relevant management course or programme (A)
- Completion of a teaching course (A)
- MD or PhD (A)
- Comprehensive training on a recognised SpR programme or equivalent in Medical Oncology (I/A)
- Demonstrable experience in all aspects of Clinical Governance including leading clinical audits and implementing change (I/A)
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients (I/A)
- A track record in teaching medical and other clinical staff and students (I/A)
- Experience of giving clinical presentations (A)
- Published research as papers or presentations (A)
- Experience of an Acute Oncology Service (I/A) and Melanoma
- Experience of conducting clinical research (I/A)
