Within the Construction environment, think about buying materials, managing big projects, ensuring health and safety, and customer service. At any given time, you'll find us working on some circa 400 developments across the UK, each with unique challenges. Some are from scratch on brownfield sites; others involve adapting existing buildings like old factories or disused hospitals.
We need people who can bring fresh ideas and imagination, alongside the commercial ability to manage people, budgets, and costs. Our construction teams are highly professional, evidenced by winning more NHBC Pride in the Job Awards than any other housebuilder for thirteen consecutive years.
Reporting to the Construction Director, the role involves overseeing site development from land acquisition to completion, ensuring safety, health, environmental standards, and programme, quality, and cost targets are met within budgets and timelines through effective management of Site Managers and subcontractors. The role also includes delivering the divisional construction execution plan.
You will be expected to:
- Manage and monitor SHE performance to ensure compliance with legal obligations and company standards.
- Support in tender processes for subcontractors and suppliers, monitor their performance, and provide feedback to the Commercial department.
- Ensure resources are adequate for effective site starts.
- Monitor construction performance against programme to meet targets and ensure timely completions, providing updates through relevant meetings.
- Control costs related to non-productive and prelim expenditure, participating in cost control meetings.
- Liaise with departments to support site management roles, ensuring availability of information, materials, and contractors.
- Oversee each construction stage to ensure quality standards.
- Coordinate with purchasers to provide excellent post-completion service.
- Support Site Managers in resource allocation, clear guidelines, communication, training, and workload organization.
- Maintain professional interfaces with purchasers, external contacts, and contractors.
- Assist the Construction Director in departmental performance matters.
- Set and achieve build programme targets as advised.
- Lead and develop site management teams.
Additionally, the role involves recruiting and supporting personnel through the interview process.
To be successful, candidates should be:
- Strong team motivators with drive and tenacity.
- Experienced in senior construction roles, including managerial responsibilities.
- Self-confident, decisive, resilient, and able to thrive under pressure.
- Possibly members of the Chartered Institute of Builders or qualified to NVQ level 5 in Construction Management, with extensive trade experience (desirable, not essential).
- Knowledgeable about construction trades, legislative requirements, Health and Safety, NHBC standards, and Building Regulations.
- Knowledgeable in Customer Care issues.
