Job Description

Pan Macmillan is looking for a detail-oriented Data Analyst to join our London-based Analytics team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys problem-solving, learning new technologies, working with data to generate insight and communicating findings to a broad range of stakeholders.

Your team:
You'll be joining a small but dynamic team of four, reporting to the Head of Analytics and working alongside a Data Analyst and a Data Engineer. We provide accurate and timely data to support insight-driven decision-making across the business, managing an expanding Snowflake data warehouse and a suite of automated Tableau dashboards. We are a project team, addressing commercial and business priorities, and all roles have some overlap and collaboration.

Your role:
Day to day, you will be maintaining and improving our existing suite of Tableau dashboards, querying our data warehouse, helping colleagues use data effectively, and answering ad hoc data queries. You will also work on longer-term projects, ensuring our suite of dashboards and reporting evolve to meet business needs.

This role also involves developing your ability to support our Engineer in maintaining our data warehouses, ensuring data quality, managing pipelines and contributing to the ongoing development of our analytics infrastructure.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Maintaining, improving, and contributing to our suite of Tableau dashboards and automated solutions

  • Understanding reporting and insight needs:
    • Participating in requirement gathering and translating needs into effective dashboards

    • Identifying, assessing, and developing suitable data sources to support business reporting and insight needs

    • Developing visually appealing and digestible reports to encourage self-service and efficiency

  • Querying and analysing data using SQL, Tableau, and other relevant technologies, with a willingness to upskill where needed

  • Communicating insights to stakeholders through reports, presentations, emails, and meetings

  • Supporting and training others to self-serve and use Analytics dashboards and tools effectively

  • Assisting in database maintenance and development, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of our data warehouse and pipelines

  • Performing data prep, data cleansing, documentation, testing, and data verification

  • Managing workload using Asana to ensure timely delivery as part of a project team

  • Contributing to documentation and administrative duties.

Essential experience, abilities and knowledge you'll need to succeed:

  • Working knowledge of relational databases, especially using SQL for querying and creating views to support analysis (ideally T-SQL or Snowflake SQL)

  • Experience with data visualization / BI tools to create user-friendly dashboards (e.g. Tableau)

  • Experience with one or more of our technologies: APIs, Tableau Desktop, Microsoft SQL Server, Snowflake, Matillion, DBT, AWS, Python, or other scripting and programming languages

  • Some experience with data handling and data cleaning, with an interest in developing data engineering principles

  • Proficiency with the Microsoft suite, especially Excel (including formulas, functions, pivots, and preferably macros/VBA)

  • A curious mindset with a problem-solving approach, able to refine questions and extract stories and meaning from data

  • Strong commercial awareness and the ability to apply data insights to business decisions

  • Ability to balance both practical and strategic thinking when working with data to produce actionable insight

  • A collaborative approach and willingness to contribute ideas in a small team

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to present and interpret data for non-data audiences

  • Excellent attention to detail with a focus on accuracy, relevancy, and quality

  • Ability to manage workload effectively and meet deadlines.

Desirable skills we'd love you to have:

  • Experience with using SQL to create or manage stored procedures and functions

  • Familiarity with database principles and data flow concepts

  • Experience with creating and maintaining project and process documentation

  • Ability to understand and apply statistical methods and to identify trends, and anomalies

  • An interest or experience in publishing, reading or the contemporary book market

  • Experience with publishing technologies and systems (e.g. Biblio, Vista, Midas, BookScan)

  • Experience in a commercial industry or department, with an understanding of business data applications.

What you'll get in return:
In return we can offer you a range of great projects, a supportive and collaborative working environment as well as a competitive salary and benefits package.

Salary starting from: £36,000

Closing Date: 16 March 2025

Some of the benefits we offer:
