Role overview

As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible for managing and improving the company's data ingestion, transformation, and analytical needs, directly supporting Data Science and Analytics functions. This role is essential in building and scaling new and existing data streams to support WGSN's growing set of data products and services. Despite a core set of responsibilities, this role requires an element of creativity and curiosity in developing new approaches to solve problems.

Key accountabilities
  • ETL Development
  • Develop and implement robust Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to ensure the seamless flow of data from source systems to data repositories.
  • Optimise and streamline data pipelines for maximum performance and reliability.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and be creative in designing appropriate solutions.
  • Database Management
  • Manage and administer databases, ensuring data integrity, security, and availability.
  • Perform database tuning and optimisation for improved query performance.
  • Data Quality and Governance
  • Implement data alerting, testing, and quality checks, ensuring adherence to governance policies.
  • Collaboration and Communication
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and software engineers, to understand data needs and deliver effective solutions.
  • Clearly communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • New tools and technologies
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends in data engineering and data science.
  • Proactively evaluate and productionise new developments in AI that can enhance the data science and engineering workflow.
This list is not exhaustive and there may be other activities you are required to deliver. Skills, experience & qualifications required
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of data engineering experience, with a proven track record of designing, building, and maintaining scalable data pipelines and ETL processes.
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience working with relational and non-relational databases (e.g. Snowflake, BigQuery, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB).
  • Hands-on experience with big data technologies such as Apache Spark, Kafka, Hive, or Hadoop.
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Scala, Java, R).
  • Experience deploying and maintaining cloud infrastructure (e.g. AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Familiarity with data modeling and warehousing concepts, and dimensional modeling techniques. dbt knowledge is preferable.
  • Comfortable working with CI/CD tools, version control, and containers (e.g Git, Jenkins, Docker).
  • Understanding of data governance, security best practices, and compliance frameworks such as GDPR or HIPAA.
  • Familiarity with project management tools and Agile ways of working (e.g. Jira, Asana). Can craft KPIs to measure the impact of data-driven projects and initiatives.
