We are looking to recruit a Principal Engineer as Deputy Facility Safety Case Owner (FSCO) to join the FSCO team at Rolls-Royce Submarines - Vulcan.
This position is required in support of our nuclear facilities at the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment (NRTE). The role supports the maintenance of a safety envelope underpinning the operation of systems, structures, and components to support facility operations and to ensure safe delivery of key site programmes.

This position is required in support of our nuclear facilities at the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment (NRTE). The site is part of our nuclear business, which is a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority, managing all aspects of plant design, safety, manufacture, performance, and through-life support.

You will work as part of a team of facility safety case owners, safety case practitioners, and assurance staff reporting to the Vulcan Chief Engineer, providing safety assurance and supporting operations at the Vulcan NRTE. The site is currently delivering against significant programmes of work, which provides an excellent opportunity to develop and gain experience in the nuclear industry.

What you will be doing
As Deputy FSCO your key accountabilities will be to assist the FSCO to:
- Maintain a safe envelope and provide safety oversight for the nuclear facilities and key site programmes.
- Ensure safety implications are fully considered and changes are appropriately sponsored and approved through site due process.
- Ensure that the facility is optimised to comply with the As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) principle.
- Provide practical and technical advice on applicable site safety management arrangements, facility, and process safety cases taking account of enterprise and industry best practice.
- Provide cover for the FSCO which will be enabled by comparative qualification to FSCO level.
Who we're looking for:
- Experience working within an engineering discipline is essential.
- Degree qualified in an engineering or science-based subject or relevant industry experience. Experience working in the nuclear industry or other well-regulated environment is highly desirable.
- Good understanding and demonstrable experience of safety case production, development, and review.
- Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills (both verbal and written) and the ability to confidently interface with stakeholders at all levels within the organisation.
- The ability to write well-structured reports that present clear arguments with a sound basis for recommendations.
- Enthusiastic, motivated, and committed to delivering continuous improvement in challenging circumstances.
- Good project management skills.
- Professional registration through a recognised institute is desirable.
