Job overviewThe Critical Care Outreach Team at NHNN, affiliated with the Patient Emergency Response and Resuscitation Team (PERRT) within the wider UCLH Trust, is a multi-disciplinary team of experienced critical care practitioners that assist in the care of patients who are acutely unwell or who are deteriorating.
This is achieved by supporting, educating and working with ward staff and the multidisciplinary team; optimising the quality and appropriateness of critically ill patients' treatment, care and experience.
The team also provides a trust-wide resuscitation service providing a clinical response to cardiac arrest calls and deteriorating patients, contributing to the delivery of specialised resuscitation training and risk management to a variety of acute and specialist hospitals sites in the centre of London.
Main duties of the jobIn conjunction with the band 7s and 8a in NHNN CCOT (and PERRT), the Deputy Charge Nurse / Sister will assist in the development of the NHNN CCOT (and PERRT) service and patient safety by:
- Provision of an expert critical care nursing response to deteriorating and at-risk patients.
- Supporting patients who step down from Critical Care to the wards.
- Support of initiatives to improve recognition and response to deteriorating and at-risk patients.
- Assistance in the delivery of training programmes in emergency response and resuscitation practices to clinical staff of all grades and specialities.
- Responding as a clinical member of the emergency response / resuscitation teams and whilst attending clinical emergency calls across the Trust, providing expertise to the cardiac arrest team to ensure evidenced based practice is provided.
- Ensuring all clinical areas have access to resuscitation equipment (appropriate to area) and consumables across the Trust.
- Registered Nurse.
- Relevant post qualification clinical course (critical care).
- Minimum 2 years' experience following post qualification relevant course.
- Recognised mentorship / teaching course.
- A desire to gain instructor status in advanced national courses.
- Resuscitation Council (UK) ILS provider course - adult and / or paediatric.
- Resuscitation Council (UK), ALS, EPALS or ALSG APLS Provider course.
- Have or currently studying for a first degree qualification or equivalent.
- Evidence of involvement in research and / or quality improvement projects.
- Experience in managing level 3 patients.
- Experience teaching and responding to learners' individual needs.
- Understanding of risk management/ governance issues.
- Experience in managing cardiac arrests.
- Experience in leading clinical teams.
- Experience in delivering multidisciplinary training programmes.
- Able to perform a rapid physical assessment of an acutely unwell patient.
- Able to formulate an immediate and safe management plan for an acutely unwell patient.
- Able to perform venepuncture.
- Able to perform peripheral cannulation.
- Demonstrate ability to meet Trust Values of safety, kindness, teamwork and improving.
- Able to communicate effectively and sensitively: both verbally and in writing.
- Able to articulate reasons for desire to work in this clinical area.
- Able to communicate with all levels of Trust staff.

- Being familiar with, and adhering to Trust policies and guidance on infection prevention and control.
- Completing all required training and education (both via e-learning and face to face) on infection prevention and control.
- Including infection prevention and control as an integral part of your continuous personal/professional development and included in your annual appraisal.
- Taking personal responsibility so far as is reasonably practicable, in helping ensure that effective prevention and control of health care associated infections is embedded into everyday practice and applied consistently.
- Flexible approach to work patterns.

- Physically able to attend cardiac arrest calls and assist as a member of the team.
- Able to facilitate the safe moving of equipment for training such as manikins.
- Good dexterity to carry out emergency procedures e.g. defibrillation, cannulation within their own scope of practice.
