Director of Community & Sport Development

As Director of Community & Sport Development, you will take overall strategic leadership for the development and delivery of swim, bike, run and triathlon at grassroots level.

About Director of Community & Sport Development

This wide-ranging and challenging remit spans work across both British Triathlon and Triathlon England, with specific ownership for the development strategy for England (the BIG Active).

Incorporating the work strands of clubs, events, participation, regions, workforce, and coaching as well as place, this role is a key senior leadership position within the sport and within the wider sporting sector. Being active has never been more important for our nation and the health and wellbeing benefits of taking part in sport are clear. We want as many people to be able to swim, bike and run as well as watch and enjoy our sport - so, if you are ready for that challenge, this role could be for you!

Alongside a wide-ranging directorate remit, the Director of Community & Sport Development is also a key member of the British Triathlon Executive Team, which comes with an expectation of contributing to the wider organisational strategy and modelling strong leadership behaviours, as well as championing our organisational values.

You will:

  • Lead the Development Directorate of the National Governing Body, driving forward the Triathlon England Development Strategy across Swim, Bike, Run, and Triathlon.
  • Oversee, and provide strategic leadership for, all work strands of grassroots development, including participation (across adults, children & young people, and families), coaching and workforce development, and club development.
  • Lead on relationships and partnerships with a wide range of national stakeholders and partners, including Sport England, Triathlon England, and Performance Pathway.

We're searching for a Senior Leader with substantial experience of sports development and programme delivery in complex environments. A highly effective communicator, you'll have a real passion and energy, along with big ambitions for British Triathlon and the sport of triathlon. You'll be strategic, with the ability to inspire others and build and lead high-performing teams. With a desire to make a real change, it's vital you have proven experience of managing large budgets and complex programme delivery to ensure achievement of annual objectives and project timelines.

We value the different perspectives that a more representative workforce will bring to our work and are particularly keen to hear from applicants from diverse communities and backgrounds.

Successful working relationships are key to any role. Our new Director of Community & Sport Development will report into our Chief Executive Officer. The successful candidate will be an integral and valued member of the Development Directorate and Executive Team. With a budget responsibility of circa £3m, your direct reports will be our Head of Participation, Head of Workforce, Head of Events, and Head of Clubs and Regions, with a wider directorate of around 25. You will likely thrive through developing and maintaining trusted relationships with key stakeholders, including Sport England, Triathlon England Management Board (TEMB), British Triathlon Board, Triathlon England Council, Triathlon Trust, Executive Team and Multiple Delivery Partners.

The role will benefit from our successful hybrid working model, where colleagues work from our Loughborough head office a couple of days a week, providing a supportive, collaborative, and fun working environment. Frequent travel within the UK will also be an important part of the role.

British Triathlon offers a competitive benefits package that includes:

  • 25 days annual leave, increasing with length of service, enhanced with a flexible holiday buying scheme.
  • A commitment to your development, with weekly time ringfenced for personal and collaborative learning and development.
  • The day off to celebrate your birthday however you wish.
  • Free and accessible parking outside the Loughborough head office and secure covered bike storage.
  • Enhanced Maternity, Paternity and Adoption pay.
  • Pension scheme, life assurance scheme, and private medical insurance to care for you and your loved ones.
  • Support for a healthy lifestyle, including discounted gym membership at Loughborough University campus and a cycle to work scheme.

British Triathlon is passionate about developing an environment that makes Britain the world's leading triathlon nation, enabling success and increasing participation. We're looking for people who can bring skills and ambition to an inclusive, people-centred workplace, who are determined to create positive impact, and who value doing what's right above doing what is expected.
