We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.
About the role
This is an exciting time to join the NHM's newest endeavours in translating our science into commercial products. The Biodiversity Futures Lab (BFL), who are leading on making the Biodiversity Intactness Index (BII) available for academic, commercial and policy stakeholders, require a Geospatial Analyst to work with the science team in the development and delivery of robust data products.
Currently BII uses ecological data, supplemented by a variety of geospatial datasets, to predict the status of biodiversity on land worldwide. We have developed a Reproducible Analytical Pipeline in R to produce geospatial maps of the health of nature, for academic, policy and commercial uses. This role will provide a specialism to implement best practice with respect to geospatial data.
Land-use change is the dominant driver of global terrestrial biodiversity loss. The team uses a leading-edge bespoke land-use dataset. This role would be essential in augmenting these data with measures of land-use intensity and plantation forests, permitting more accurate and meaningful estimates of biodiversity change in response to human activities. This work will be vital, both to meet specific gates of delivery for our commercial product and as an essential contribution to the ongoing scientific development of the BII.
About you
The successful candidate will be experienced in geospatial mapping and implementing best practice with respect to geospatial data. You will be a self-starter, able to work and prioritise independently, with experience of working across research projects with multiple stakeholders working within a small team. To thrive in this role, you will be enthusiastic about working on cutting-edge research science to maximise its potential policy and commercial impact, as part of a small team.

Hybrid working

We also recognise the benefits and flexibility that hybrid working brings. We operate a hybrid working model that requires regular, weekly attendance for this role, with the precise pattern of days on site and worked from home to be agreed with your manager.
