Head of Data Science, Senior Director, BioPharmaceuticals R&D

We are seeking an entrepreneurial global leader to join our Data Science and Advanced Analytics (DS&AA) department as Head of the Data Science team. In this leadership role, you will be responsible for a team of experts with data science and machine learning backgrounds passionate about developing solutions to our most ambitious problems in clinical development. Your portfolio will encompass high-value, rapid delivery projects that directly support the drug portfolio needs of BioPharmaceuticals Therapy Areas, as well as cross-functional strategic builds with ground-breaking potential. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with leading experts in clinical research, statistics, and operations, engaging closely with our most senior R&D leaders to drive innovation and excellence across the organization.

Accountabilities

• Lead and develop a high-performing team of approximately 10 quantitative experts, fostering innovation and excellence.
• Serve as a key member of the DS&AA Leadership Team, shaping departmental strategy aligning R&D ambition to data science opportunities.
• Drive the development and adoption of new tools and methodologies, creating novel solutions where off-the-shelf tools and methodologies fall short.
• Provide leadership in one or more area of data science and machine learning, proposing and delivering impactful projects that enhance clinical development and the R&D pipeline.
• Actively coach and mentor colleagues to strengthen data science capabilities across AstraZeneca.
• Ensure all work complies with appropriate regulations and procedures.
• Engage with the external innovation ecosystem to identify collaboration opportunities and novel advancements.

Essential Skills/Experience

• MSc degree in rigorous quantitative science (such as mathematics, computer science, engineering).
• 5+ years of meaningful experience.
• Track record of delivery excellence, delivering a portfolio of relevant projects with significant impact aligned to strategic objectives.
• Experience and wide reputation within the pharmaceutical and/or biotech industry.
• Practical software development and analytics skills in standard data science tools.
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams with varied strengths.
• Advanced communication, business analysis, and consultancy skills.
• Experience of working in a global organization.
• Recognized expert, with multiple published papers and/or patents.
• Entrepreneurial approach.

Desirable Skills/Experience

• PhD degree.
