Linux Engineer - Night shift
Docklands, London (Hybrid)
£70,000 - £75,000 per annum + 40% shift uplift + annual discretionary bonus

On behalf of a Leading financial services organisation, I am seeking a Linux Engineer to provide operational shift support for Production, Test and Development Linux Infrastructure. Responsibilities include Linux backup/restores, daily health checks, maintenance tasks, break/fix, server builds and server patching.

PLEASE NOTE: this is a night shift role with working hours running from 23:00 GMT - 07:30 GMT. The working week starts at 23:00 Sunday night local time and finishes at 07:30am on Friday morning. You will be required to work x2 days in their London offices.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide operational shift support for Production, Test and Development Linux Infrastructure.
  • Responsibilities include Linux backup/restores, daily health checks, maintenance tasks, break/fix, server builds and server patching.
  • Manage and escalate problems as appropriate.
  • Provide 24/7 on-call cover on a rotational shift basis.
  • Ensure that the BAU service is prioritised and all incidents, problems and service requests are responded to in an efficient manner without negatively impacting SLAs and reporting metrics in place.
  • Work closely with 3rd party vendors to provide support for products such as RedHat Linux, Veritas Cluster Server, etc.
  • Investigate defects or problems; work with internal teams and external vendors to Identify solutions and support any fixes that are required as part of service improvement.
  • Participate in periodic corporate Disaster Recovery testing activities.
  • Follow the organisations Change Management procedure and other standard practices in installing, configuring and supporting Linux Infrastructure, Veritas Cluster Server and related items in Dev, Test and Prod environments.
  • Upgrade or maintain software at a time when the impact to the business is minimised.
  • Execute the failover for the Linux and application services as required.
  • Create, maintain and review operational process and support documentation.
  • Perform daily/weekly/quarterly system checks.
  • Ensure any issues identified are tracked and addressed.
  • Participate in planned weekend work as required and as part of the on-call responsibilities
  • Support periodic patching activity(usually quarterly).

Experience/Skills required:

  • Previous experience in a Linux based Engineer capacity, preferably within a financial services environment.
  • Good working Knowledge of Linux Operating Environment, Clustering Technologies, Virtualization, Cloud Computing(AWS), DevOps Tooling, TCP/IP Networking
  • Experience in Shell Scripting, Ansible Playbooks, Python
  • Possess a strong service-oriented mind set who can consistently deliver a high level of service to the business.
  • Be able to manage their time effectively and prioritise their own workload in order to meet changing demands from the business.
  • Self-motivated to exceed management expectations and objectives.
  • Demonstrate good technical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A high level of presentation and communications skills with the ability to communicate confidently with both business and technical staff at all levels.
  • Ability to engage with the business to effectively support the environment with some oversight.
  • Good understanding of ITIL practices

Desirable:

  • Industry Standard IT certification AWS/Linux (Redhat)/VMware/Symantec VCS
  • ITIL certification
