Job Description

We wish to appoint a locum consultant colleague to join the Intensive Care team at Glasgow Royal Infirmary to cover a period of maternity leave. The successful candidate will join a cohesive and friendly team of Intensive Care Consultants. The group is committed to improving all aspects of the care we provide and as such we have developed a strong focus on quality improvement in recent years.

The intensive care unit is a mixed 20 bedded area (16 level 3 beds, 4 level surgical 2 beds) arranged as 2 co-located units of 10 beds.

There are currently 15 substantive consultants who provide care to Intensive Care, with the majority providing some service in an additional specialty. Consultant work day time work in Intensive Care is generally arranged in blocks of 4 days (Monday - Thursday) and 3 days (Friday - Sunday).

On call is provided 1:15 first on (overnight) and 1:15 second on (additional evening cover Monday - Friday, additional daytime cover Saturday and Sunday).

Minimum unit staffing is one consultant and one trainee for each 10 bedded unit. There are also 3 foundation year 1 trainees and 4.5 substantive Advanced Critical Care Practitioners. There may also be senior trainees in Intensive Care Medicine and/or supernumerary trainees from other medical specialties.

Glasgow Royal Infirmary provides tertiary care for Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic disease, complex Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Intestinal failure, Abdominal and Musculoskeletal Sarcoma Surgery and Gynaecological cancer. The Regional Plastics service and the Invasive Placental Disease service are also located at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Glasgow Royal Infirmary is the adult hub of the National Burns Service.

We have an active research programme, in conjunction with the University department of Anaesthesia, Pain and Critical Care. The existing consultant body has varied interests and expertise including quality improvement, ultrasound, education, ventilation and respiratory disease, ethics, diagnostic error and academic critical care.

The job plan may be able to accommodate some sessions in another service: it may be possible to accommodate sessions in anaesthesia, medicine or emergency medicine.

Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK trained applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
