DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
Channel 4's Broadcast Technology & Content Systems function sits within the Technology Department which also incorporates Architecture, Information Security and IT Service Management. The Head of Department reports into the Director of Technology & Distribution.

JOB PURPOSE
The Online Engineering Manager will be responsible for leading a team of Online Engineers to support the delivery of video, audio, packaging, DRM and delivery technology for Channel 4 Streaming. This team works primarily alongside a range of internal development and delivery teams and governs the day-to-day supplier relationships for content preparations. The successful candidate will be expected to develop the team, which is a mix of engineers and project managers. The role is also responsible for managing BAU performance of VoD, Simulcast & Online service content delivery, governing performance with our Suppliers and Service Providers.

Working closely with the Technology Senior Management, the post holder will drive forward improvement in process, supplier management and overall stability of Channel 4's end-to-end Broadcast services. They will also work closely with the operational teams to ensure our technology is up to date and supporting the operation and output of our services. This includes ensuring all technology delivery is aligned with our strategy.

This is a management role with line management responsibility for reports in the team. It will involve a reasonable degree of representation on one or more senior stakeholder forums within Channel 4, plus the wider industry relationships.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Identification and prioritisation of technology improvements, service performance and stakeholder relationships
  • Driving major change programmes within our department and business-wide.
  • Management of the team to deliver technology change, to time and budget.
  • Preparation of documentation and, where appropriate, presentations to support the business processes and to demonstrate the progress and outcome of new service adoption to the Head of Technology, Content Systems and Director of Technology & Distribution.
  • Integral member of the Broadcast Technology leadership team.
  • Line management and development of the Online Engineering team.
  • Support the Head of Technology with evolving the technology and supplier strategy to meet the channels objectives.
  • Provide management and leadership for all live and VoD content preparation services for Channel 4 Streaming and be the point of contact for significant issues ensuring timely resolution of outages.
  • To provide technical support, advice, and guidance to the Channel 4 Streaming and operations function.
  • Represent the Broadcast Technology function in relevant external meetings with suppliers, clients, and other broadcasters.
  • To undertake administrative and support tasks as appropriate.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
  • Must have a significant amount of hands-on experience managing an engineering team within the broadcast industry, preferably in a tier one broadcaster.
  • Must have the ability to consider multiple, individually complex Online, Video, and Content engineering problems in a holistic manner when deciding a course of action.
  • Must have experience of and demonstrate strong capabilities in supplier relationship management.
  • Must be capable of defining and tracking the overarching financial plan for the team with support from their engineering reports.
  • Required to maintain a working knowledge of business tasks performed by the relevant users, and how they could be enhanced through the application of technological innovation in the space.
  • Requires experience of team leadership.

  • Works with operational independence using discretion and taking calculated risks where appropriate.
  • Has a broad variety of complex work matters to prioritise and resolve.
  • Goals for the role are set at a macro level and overall progress is reported at regular meetings with the Head of Technology.
  • Autonomy to resolve issues with suppliers, peers or other areas of the business as required only escalating to higher level when necessary.
  • To innovate and evolve practices and procedures in a manner appropriate to the agreed strategy and in line with C4's wider corporate objectives.
  • Must be comfortable working within the constraints of limited resources, timescales and high pace of change.
Managing Resources (People, Budgets, Systems, Projects)
  • Must have a high level of self-motivation and organisation and demonstrate the ability to work to critical deadlines under pressure.
  • Day to day direction of resources under their line management.
  • The role includes relationship building and liaising with key stakeholders in internal Channel 4 departments, and close collaboration with the other areas of the department.
Relationship Management (Internal, External, 3rd parties)
  • Must work closely with the Head of Technology and wider Technology function, and is focused on developing, maintaining, and influencing key relationships both inside the Channel 4 business and with 3rd parties.
  • Must always present themselves in a professional manner when dealing with both internal and 3rd party stakeholders.
Complexity/Problem Solving
  • Will work on complex and cutting-edge Broadcast events requiring deep analytical thinking and an ability to process and manage multiple business inputs at the same time in order to devise solutions with suppliers.
Salary: Basic salary starting at £83,125.00

Hybrid working:
From September 2023 employees will be working minimum 3 days per week in their office location. The other 2 days should be working from home. This is to create more time for collaboration, creativity, learning and feedback. We also have a working from another location policy for up to 10 days. This pattern is subject to future changes which would be communicated in advance to provide employees with adequate notice of any change.
