Job overviewThis is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Registered Nurse to join the Children and Young People's (CYP) service at UCLH to deliver transformational patient care for young people with respiratory illnesses including asthma, tracheostomies, and long-term non-invasive ventilatory support. You will be joining a vibrant multidisciplinary team providing supportive care to ensure CYP and their families receive high-quality clinical care from admission through to discharge and when they are at home in the community. Patient safety and a positive patient experience is at the heart of this role.

A key focus of this role is delivering exceptional asthma care, including nurse-led asthma assessment and management clinics, supporting consultant-led clinics, and coordinating care with community teams and tertiary centres.
As the Respiratory CNS, you will lead the winter palivizumab vaccination service.
You will also work collaboratively across hospital services, including neonatal, oncology, and general paediatric teams. You will play a vital role in supporting respiratory patients admitted to the ward, managing high-dependency care, tracheostomies, and long-term ventilation (LTV).
This position also involves providing expert training to nursing and medical teams across the division, ensuring the highest standards of care. Key clinical skills for this role include assessment and care planning, performing lung function tests and skin prick testing, teaching, and leading service management and improvement initiatives.

Person specification Knowledge and Qualifications- RN (child) / RGN
- 1st level registration with NMC
- Degree level education or equivalent
- Independent nurse prescriber or working towards
- Substantial experience at Band 6 including working in either: general/respiratory paediatrics or critical care (intensive care, HDU, A&E)
- Knowledge and management of acutely unwell respiratory management and the use of CPAP and Airvo (High flow oxygen)
- Knowledge and experience in the management of common paediatric respiratory conditions such as asthma, wheeze, and chronic lung disease
- Knowledge of the research process
- Research and audit experience
- Experience of health and safety issues pertaining to clinical practice
- Knowledge and experience of the management of children with tracheostomies
- Organisational and managerial skills
- Evidence of professional development
- Able to work independently, prioritise workload and manage own time
- IT skills to include Outlook diary, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, EPR
- Previous Clinical Nurse Specialist experience
- Experience of participation in service improvement initiatives
- Knowledge and experience in the management of children requiring long-term ventilation
- Ability to organise and run Nurse Led clinics or similar clinical services related to paediatric respiratory care.
- Able to manage own caseload
- Ability to lead and coordinate change and service development
- Competent writing skills
- Teaching and assessing skills.
- Ability to work with databases
