An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Respiratory Lead Nurse to join our Nursing and Care Directorate. This role will require the successful candidate to play a pivotal role in building the respiratory expertise within the clinical team, focusing on upskilling other clinical leads and staff at all levels to ensure the delivery of high-quality care to children and young people with complex respiratory needs.
As well as being the clinical nurse expert overseeing respiratory assessment and care plans for the CYP, the post-holder will also empower the wider clinical workforce, ensuring they are fully equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide effective respiratory support.
This role will lead the development of education, training, and resources to establish sustainable, expert respiratory care practices across the team.
This role reports directly to the Head of Care and works closely with the wider clinical leadership team to ensure the Children's Trust remains a leader in respiratory care for children with long-term ventilation and tracheostomy needs.
Role Requirements
- Lead on the upskilling and education of clinical leads and nursing and care teams across the service to build expertise in respiratory care.
- Oversight of respiratory assessment and care planning for CYP with complex respiratory needs across residential care and rehabilitation.
- Decision making responsibility in relation to complex respiratory care (e.g. changing ventilator settings, trialling one-way valves) working in a team around the child.
- Collaborate with the team around the child within rehabilitation, residential/school settings with particular focus on working in partnership with the respiratory physiotherapist.
- Collaborate with the Clinical Education Lead to develop and implement structured training programs for nursing staff, ensuring the workforce can confidently manage complex respiratory needs.
- Develop a system of continuous clinical support and knowledge sharing, ensuring that all staff are equipped to deliver evidence-based, high-quality respiratory care.
- Support staff who cover the Clinical Site Manager rota (CSMs) and other team leaders in the development of their respiratory care competencies, ensuring they can deliver care at the highest standard without relying on a single expert.

The Children's Trust is the UK's leading charity for children with acquired brain injury, providing expert rehabilitation, education, therapy, and care at our national specialist centre in Tadworth, and to children and their families across the UK, via our Brain Injury Community Service.

Rehabilitation of Offenders
Many roles at The Children's Trust are exempt from the provisions of Section 4 (2) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2013 and 2020) and as such, are subject to an Enhanced DBS check. Successful applicants will be required to complete an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check, which will disclose all unspent convictions and adult cautions and any spent convictions or adult cautions that would not be protected.
