The Role

Are you a civil engineer or a senior civil engineer looking for your next move? Wood is seeking Civil Engineers and Senior Engineers of all levels of experience to join Transmission & Distribution Ltd UK Engineering team as part of our continued ongoing growth, which is not just tied to single projects. These positions will focus on overseeing HV overhead line and/or underground cable projects; however, we'd like to hear from you if you can demonstrate an understanding of design of concrete, earthworks, geotechnical or spread/piled foundations, experience with the specification/interpretation of geotechnical investigations and production of design calculations and reports.

As an engineer, you will provide design management, civil engineering design and advice as required to meet project requirements. Embracing hybrid working, Wood offers a blend of office and remote work options. Travel may be necessary, and the role is flexible with the possibility of being positioned at any of Wood's UK offices.

Supported by our Principal Civil Engineer, the role(s) focus on the engineering design to ensure the safe and efficient construction of major projects. This includes management of the layout design process, identification and mitigation of project risks and delivery of elements of design, along with interfacing with project stakeholders and consultants, and technical review of preliminary designs or ad-hoc technical/regulatory advice. Additionally, the Civil Engineer supports by providing advice, review, and design services, and to promote consistent best practice in civil engineering and design.

Typical responsibilities

• Manage and deliver engineering projects by performing technical and feasibility studies, including analysing maps, survey reports, and related data to create and design civil engineering projects
• Identify and manage risks through extensive impact assessments and collaborate with specialists in survey, geotechnical, pile design, and flood risk
• Interface with stakeholders to provide advice on safety, quality, cost, and project timelines
• Develop and implement innovative solutions to maximize value and minimize costs, considering construction costs, regulations, and environmental impacts
• Coordinate best practices and maintain high technical standards across Wood Transmission & Distribution Ltd
• Create and check deliverables using design software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, and Tekla Tedds, and undertake complex calculations to Eurocode 2, Eurocode 7, BS8004, etc.
• Compile subcontractor specifications and supervise tendering procedures
• Control document production using a do/check/approval process and Bentley ProjectWise
• Resolve design and development problems, manage budgets and resources, schedule material and equipment purchases, and ensure compliance with legal requirements, especially health and safety.
• Ensure projects run smoothly and structures are completed within budget and on time

Expected:

• Honours degree in Civil Engineering or related subject, eligible to progress towards CEng status through the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
• Practical application of engineering principles to civil engineering projects, with specialist knowledge in areas such as geotechnical, earthworks, and drainage being advantageous
• Proven experience in managing health, safety, and risk mitigation in design, with a working knowledge of UK CDM Regulations
• Understanding of engineering principles affecting project development, cross-functional project requirements, and priorities
• Knowledge of contract compliance, cost control, and the relative value of engineering solutions
• Interest in the development and implementation of new processes and technology
• Sound time management skills to balance project priorities
• Collaborative working style across project functions, with proven presentation skills to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Strong attention to detail during the drafting and review of engineering deliverables
• Fluent in spoken and written English, with the ability to drive being beneficial
