The Department of Transplantation & Hepatobiliary Surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals is offering an exciting opportunity to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow in the department.
There are 11 Consultants working in the Department of Transplantation & Hepatobiliary Surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and there are more than 1000 major procedures performed annually.
The post offers an excellent opportunity in higher surgical training in Liver Transplantation, Hepatobiliary surgery, and Organ Retrieval.
The successful candidate will be part of the out of hours rota for Organ retrieval and will cover Transplantation & Hepatobiliary surgery or General Surgery emergencies. The candidate will also be expected to cover elective and emergency in-patient and day case surgery, general, Transplant and Hepatobiliary specialist out-patient clinics and regular ward work.
Previous experience in Organ Retrieval, Transplantation & Hepatobiliary Surgery is highly desirable and evidence of this should be submitted in the application form.
The Senior Fellow post is offered on a 12 months fixed term contract.

Main duties of the jobDuties will include:
- Pre-admissions clinics
- Operating theatre and outpatients
- Post-operative intensive care and ward management
- Discussions with relatives
- Initiation/change of treatment
- Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
- Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
- Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-informed practice
- Capacity to monitor developing situations and anticipate issues
- Evidence of thoroughness (is well prepared, shows self-discipline/commitment, is punctual and meets deadlines)
- Capacity to use logical/lateral thinking to solve problems/make decisions, indicating an analytical/scientific approach
- Capacity to take in others' perspectives and treat others with understanding; sees patients as people. Demonstrates respect for all
- Capacity to operate under pressure. Demonstrates initiative & resilience to cope with changing circumstances. Is able to deliver good clinical care in the face of uncertainty

- Evidence of feedback for teaching
- Instructor status (or a recommendation for instructor status) in an advanced life support course (ALS, ATLS, EPLS, APLS) or equivalent course

- Demonstrable interest in, and understanding of, the specialty
- Commitment to personal and professional development
- Evidence of attendance at organised teaching and training programme(s)

- MBBS, MRCS or equivalent medical qualification
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
- Evidence of achievement of CT/ST1 competencies in medicine or Surgery (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Medical training or Core Surgical Training)
- Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
- Ability to prioritise clinical need
- Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
- Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient
- Ability to provide complete details of employment history
- Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
- Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of their period of training
- Able to work in multi-professional teams & supervise junior medical staff. Capacity to work effectively with others
- Previous experience in Organ Retrieval, Transplantation & Hepatobiliary Surgery is highly desirable
- Successful completion of relevant skills course(s)
- Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
- Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
- Demonstrates clarity in written/spoken communication & capacity to adapt language as appropriate to the situation. Able to build rapport, listen, persuade & negotiate
