Job Description

Senior Manufacturing Engineer Barrow

I am looking for a Permanent Senior Manufacturing Engineer for a leading defence company based in Barrow. You need to have assembly experience as you will oversee the assembly line.

Salary: £55,000-£65,000 per annum Dependant upon experience with benefits.

About Role

Acting principally under the direction of the Lead Manufacturing Engineer to work flexibly within the Manufacturing Engineering team, on assigned projects and activities. The scope of the tasks will primarily comprise addressing the active support of operational activities of the production and assembly departments. Liaison with other engineering team members, clients, and other DBS functional teams during project work is an integral part of the role. As the business moves towards more digital measurement methodology, there will be a requirement to develop programmes to automate the post process of measurement data sets and implement training in the use of these tools to the production and quality teams.

Core Duties
  1. To provide technical guidance and problem-solving skills to the manufacturing and assembly teams to help ensure the build quality and relevant standards are achieved in line with the overall programme schedule.
  2. To be the communication line between manufacturing/assembly and engineering ensuring clear and accurate direction is given to the relevant teams.
  3. To be/become the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for gear profile generation (hobbing, shaping, and profile grinding) and finish grinding (journals & cones/thrust faces), liaising between the Design Engineering team and the machine tool operators.
  4. To provide guidance on manufacturability of components and capability of the machine tools to ensure a right first-time approach is achievable and to support the design projects in design reviews, providing clear input.
  5. To lead PFMEAs; including process mapping, risk mitigation, and creation/approval of procedures and protocols.
  6. To interpret technical drawings and create/manufacturing drawings.
  7. To ensure planning and process encompass the Quality Assurance requirements.
  8. To drive CI activities with respect to quality, cycle time, and process improvements.
  9. To identify and design bespoke methods and tooling ensuring the relevant Machinery Safety regulations are maintained.
  10. Work closely with representatives from other internal functions, e.g. manufacturing, design engineering, and quality and external parties as required (i.e. supply chain, auditors).
  11. To create works orders and collate tech packs with accurate routings and operations.
  12. To have a good understanding of the implications and practices associated with heat treatment processes.
Functional Knowledge
  1. Working knowledge of the manufacturing methods of rotating componentry including, but not limited to, turning, boring, and milling.
  2. Working knowledge of engineering, manufacturing techniques, and business systems.
  3. Detailed understanding of dimensional measurement systems and principles.
  4. Ability to interpret technical drawings and create/approve stage manufacturing drawings.
  5. Strong understanding of GD&T.
  6. Experience of CNC programming.
  7. SAP aware/user, in the context of manufacturing engineering usage.
  8. 2D & 3D CAD ability to create layouts and record documents.
