The following position is available immediately in the Exposure Division of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR):
Senior Scientist/ Scientific Officer for Epidemiology and Statistics (f/m/d)The BfR independently prepares expert opinions and statements on issues of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific evaluation criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR makes an important contribution to the protection of human health.
The work takes place in the "Epidemiology, Statistics and Exposure Modelling" unit. You can find further information on the group here on our homepage.
Tasks
- Carrying out statistical and epidemiological analyses using a broad and up-to-date range of methods including artificial intelligence
- Assessment of epidemiological studies including development and provision of mathematical-statistical principles and tools to support the preparation and quality assurance of protocols for conducting systematic reviews, meta-analyses and weight-of-evidence assessments for epidemiological studies
- Independent selection, application and further development of statistical and epidemiological methods in the context of BfR risk assessments
- Independent preparation of scientific publications and project proposals and preparation of project reports
- Independent statistical advice on projects, organisation of training events on statistics, epidemiology and risk assessment
Your profile
- Completed university degree (Master's, Diploma or comparable university degree) in epidemiology, statistics, public health, mathematics, computer science, biology, veterinary medicine or a comparable subject related to the BfR, which imparts knowledge of modern statistics and epidemiology in the field of application of the task at hand
- Documented experience in epidemiology and related subjects (statistics, mathematics, computer science), and/or good theoretical and practical knowledge of frequentist and Bayesian methods (generalised linear models, non-linear models, multivariate analyses, meta-analyses, mixed models)
- Good theoretical and practical knowledge of computational statistics
- Good theoretical and practical knowledge of simulation-based procedures and methods of machine learning and/or artificial intelligence
- Experience with epidemiological studies and systematic procedures for knowledge integration
- Very good knowledge of statistical software (R, SPSS or SAS or equivalent programmes)
- Very good knowledge of a programming language (Python, R, C++, Matlab etc.)
- Documented knowledge of modelling (e.g. different epidemiological, spatial and/or simulation-based models etc.)
- Good knowledge of written and spoken German and English
- Flexibility, ability to work in a team, openness and resilience as well as the willingness to travel for work
If applicants do not fulfil the full requirements profile, salary will be commensurate with duties and qualifications.
- Doctorate
- Regular scientific publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals in a field relevant to the position with own work in the field of epidemiology and statistics
- Advanced knowledge of epidemiology
