Job overviewThe Admissions & Pre-Assessment team in Sutton is looking for a highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills to join our team. The team consists of Nurses, anaesthetists, health care assistants, administrators, technicians (CPET and ECHO), research nurses, and anaemia service CNS.
We provide a nurse-led clinic supported by our anaesthetic consultants for patients undergoing surgery for a range of procedures and specialties. We also support the elective admission pathway in the hospital and work closely with the Clinical site practitioners. Collaborative work with the Endoscopy, interventional radiology, private care, and day surgery teams is also essential.
Our aim is to provide safe, effective pre-operative care, ensuring a safe patient assessment in line with Royal Marsden and National guidelines, delivering a high standard of care with a patient-centered approach.
Recently, this team has supported the pre-operative pathway for oncology patients across London to continue to deliver as much cancer treatment as possible, with an initial focus on surgery.
We seek someone with a positive and progressive attitude, the ability to problem-solve, competent in advanced assessment skills, and who works well in a multi-disciplinary team.
Main duties of the job- Coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, evidence-led care to patients.
- Exercise clinical judgment and decision-making about patient needs in terms of long-term goals or plans.
- Participate fully in the day-to-day organization and running of clinical trials, including the recruitment, education, and monitoring of patients entering a clinical trial and liaising as required with trial sponsors.
- Assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to patients in accordance with the NMC code of conduct. Expectations include:
- Promote a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors, and staff.
- Participate in Trust initiatives around infection control and care quality indicators.
- Assist with local or trust initiatives to ensure continuous improvement of service quality and safeguarding high standards of care.
- Be aware of all hospital policies and procedures and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure compliance.
- Help foster a supportive working environment and maintain staff morale.

- Complete the first level assessment of patients with cancer and their families to understand their physiological, psycho-social, spiritual, and cultural needs, developing a supportive attitude to ensure these needs are met. This includes:
- Counterchecking patients' vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription, and consent before treatment administration.
- Educating patients on their treatment, including indications and side effects.
- Ensuring necessary medication and follow-up appointments are obtained.
- Planning, documenting, delivering, and evaluating care plans from admission through to discharge/transfer, discussing these with the patient, their family, and multi-disciplinary teams, and alerting the Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes.
- As a specialist cancer nurse, assess the educational and informational needs of the patient and family, producing and using appropriate materials to ensure optimum understanding of nursing care and likely outcomes.
- Provide skilled care and expertise in venepuncture and/or cannulation, assessing patients for suitable central venous access devices, and educating patients on the care and management of these devices while adopting a problem-solving approach to complications.
- Unrestricted NMC Registration to practice.
- Post graduate level in the relevant specialty/continuing professional education.
- Relevant degree or working towards master's level.
- Clinical supervision training/experience, Mentorship/Teaching Qualification.
- Physical assessment.
- Experience in the care of surgical and/or endoscopy patients.
- Pre-assessment experience for both general anaesthetic and sedation.
- Experience in managing nurse-led clinics.
- Experience in facilitation, teaching, assessing, and coaching team members/students.
- Competent in venepuncture and cannulation.
- Excellent and compassionate communication ability.
- Motivated and enthusiastic individual; possessing a "can do" attitude.
- Ability to work as part of a team and in collaboration with others using effective verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational ability, prioritizing own work and others.
- Creative, resourceful, and innovative in the delivery of care to patients and the provision of services.
- Able to navigate computer systems easily.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications (MS Word).
- RMH Certificate in venepuncture and cannulation to be obtained within three months of appointment.
- Typing speed between 25-30 words per minute.
