The Role:

As a forward-thinking in-house business unit, Hampshire Engineering Services offers a range of services to the County Council and other public authorities. Our Bridge Design Teams are looking for highly motivated and technically strong Senior Structural Design Engineers to be involved in the delivery of challenging bridge design and maintenance schemes. We have a great team environment, and we support and develop our engineers, so they are continuously developing their skills.

Working in the Bridge Design Teams, you will take autonomy of your own work and be responsible for all aspects of the project whether this is a bridge assessment, maintenance, strengthening or replacement scheme. You should have a thorough understanding of structural behaviour and the application of relevant design and assessment standards. Knowledge of construction methods and contract procedures would be an advantage.

It is also essential for you to have an in-depth understanding of current Eurocodes, British Standards and assessment codes.

We have recently completed a £5.5M bridge replacement scheme in the New Forest and a £1.4M bridge deck replacement in Winchester. Our current projects include design of a new integral two span continuous steel composite deck bridges as part of a bypass route (£26M scheme), a £25M refurbishment scheme for 4 major structures spanning the river Test and Network Rail tracks, feasibility options for replacing a 20m span footbridge over Network Rail tracks, and several small bridge and footbridge deck strengthening and replacement schemes.

We are maintaining over 1750 structures of all types of structural form, from single or multi span brick arches to Grade II listed cast iron bridges as well as modern steel and reinforced concrete bridges and retaining walls. Future work will include inspection for assessment, structural assessments, strengthening and replacement schemes to ensure all our structures remain open to highway users and in a serviceable condition. In addition, we provide technical support to external clients, developers, contractors, and other local authorities.

About You:

To be successful in the role you will have the following knowledge, skills and qualifications:

  • Educated to Degree level in Civil or Structural Engineering or significant relevant experience
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of structural behaviour, design codes, materials and proficient in computer analysis
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload to ensure that timescales and budgets are met
  • In-depth understanding of current Eurocodes, British Standards and assessment codes
  • Working knowledge of the application of structural analysis programs
  • Good communication skills and a high standard of report writing
  • Sound understanding of the CDM Regulations
  • Current driver's licence is essential as the role requires travel to various locations within Hampshire

Please note: We are unable to offer sponsorship for this role and therefore it is essential that you already have the right to work in the UK before applying.
