NHS Grampian is seeking to appoint a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon to join our dynamic skilled team at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) - a leading tertiary referral centre and university teaching hospital in North East Scotland.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a collaborative, high-volume, and research-active Colorectal unit that delivers excellence in Oncology, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Pelvic Floor Disorders, and advanced Cancer Surgery, including Pelvic Exenteration. With a strong emphasis on minimally invasive techniques, we have a well-established Robotic Surgery programme.

About the Role

As a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, you will:

  • Work within a supportive and expert team of 8 Colorectal Consultants covering the full range of Colorectal subspecialties.
  • Play a key role in Colorectal cancer resections, contributing to a centre with a high volume of complex cancer cases.
  • Have the opportunity to be involved in the management of IBD, pelvic floor conditions and advanced pelvic cancers.
  • Work collaboratively with other specialties including Oncology, Radiology, Gastroenterology and Urology, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
  • Contribute to the General Surgery on-call rota, supporting Emergency Care.
  • Have the opportunity to engage in academic research through the University of Aberdeen and work collaboratively with our unit academic team, with leadership opportunities in clinical trials and translational research.
  • Be actively involved in training and mentoring medical students and surgical trainees, fostering the next generation of surgeons.
  • While the post is primarily based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, there may be some service elective commitments at Stracathro Hospital and Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin.

Who We're Looking For

Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from date of interview.

Alternatively, applicants should possess a CESR / CESR (CP).

Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience who are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made. Whilst in locum employment, an application to obtain a CESR / CESR (CP) and entry onto the Specialist Register can be made.

We welcome applications from skilled Colorectal Surgeons with:

  • FRCS (or equivalent) and GMC specialist registration in General Surgery (within six months from date of interview).
  • Experience in colorectal cancer surgery and minimally invasive techniques.
  • JAG accreditation in lower GI endoscopy.
  • A passion for teaching, training, and research.
  • Strong teamworking skills and the ability to work collaboratively across specialties.
