Solution Architect Dynamics F&O
Posted 17 hours 10 minutes ago by Michael Bailey Associates
As a Solution Architect, you are responsible for translating customer challenges into concrete solutions. On one hand, you take on a coordinating role, and on the other, you are directly involved in projects. You may be involved in both the presales phase and/or the implementation phase of a project. The presales phase can be seen as a tender process aimed at securing a client. This includes responding to RFPs and RFIs (request for proposals) for potential clients, as well as delivering presentations and demos (either on-site or digitally).
Once the client chooses to move forward, the implementation phase begins. During this stage, you will be in regular contact with the client to fully understand their challenges and problems. Based on that understanding, you will map their needs to the solutions offered, and develop a plan. You will review this plan with the client before moving forward with coordination and execution. Depending on the project, some tasks may be delegated to Developers and Consultants. The extent to which you are involved in writing functional designs, setting up implementation budgets, and technically configuring the solution can vary from project to project, but your coordinating role will be present in all projects. You provide feedback to Developers and Consultants, listen to both colleagues and clients, and ensure that everything proceeds according to plan and budget.
You are a subject matter expert when it comes to Microsoft technologies, so it's important to keep your knowledge up to date. You will be involved in one or two implementation teams, and occasionally, the presales phase, where you work with Sales colleagues. The implementation teams consist of Developers, Consultants, and a Project Manager. If you enjoy working analytically and find it challenging to manage feedback and opinions from both clients and colleagues, this role is for you!
Roughly, your time allocation will look like this:
40% Contact/meetings with (potential) clients
20% Keeping up to date with technical (Microsoft) developments
15% Preparing for the implementation phase
15% Preparing for the presales phase
10% Internal meetings
What does your agenda look like?
Your agenda will be varied. For example, you may have an intake meeting with the client to hear about their challenges and problems. You can't wait to work out a solution after the meeting. During quieter days, you might be preparing for a Microsoft exam, which needs to be recertified every two years and requires significant time investment. You will also find time to catch up with colleagues, exchange knowledge, and have a drink together occasionally.
Practical example:
"A client has chosen to implement not only an application from our company but also an application from another vendor. These applications need to be integrated so that the client's business process is optimally supported. How do you approach this?"
You would contact the other vendor to understand the application being implemented. Based on this, you would work with the client to define how the integration will work. You would analyze potential issues and challenges, as the business process is divided between two applications. You would clearly outline these issues and explain them to the client. You will work with the Consultant from the other vendor to establish a suitable working method. Afterward, you would refine this method and discuss it with the client until the final solution is agreed upon. You will then create an action plan (including implementation budget) to be handed over to the Project Manager for execution. You, or a Consultant, would implement the solution, including writing functional designs, conducting test cases, and working on setup, development, and handover. This is often done with the Developers, who focus on programming.
