Job overview

JOB PURPOSE
Providing autism diagnostic assessments.

Providing specialist psychological assessment and interventions to autistic adults without a learning disability.

Offering advice and consultation on clients' autistic presentation and needs, as well as psychological care to colleagues in non-autism services (e.g., mental health services, adult social care, inpatient teams, rough sleeping services).

Working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team's policies and procedures.

Utilising research skills for audit, policy and service development and research;

Being involved in project work which can support service delivery and policy changes within the area served by the team/service.

Main duties of the job
  • To undertake protocol-based autism diagnostic assessments and psychological assessments of service users. This may include applying psychological tests, including neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with service users, family members and others involved in the service user's care.
  • To facilitate the enhancement of each individual client's sense of wellbeing through attaining his or her optimum level of psychological functioning.
  • To practice using non-discriminatory interventions that respect the clients' customs, values, and spiritual beliefs at all times.
  • To teach, or give training in, psychological skills and in aspects of learning disabilities to other professionals working with clients with learning disabilities in the Learning Disability Team and in other private and voluntary organizations as agreed.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external Continuing Professional Development training and development programmes, in consultation with the postholder's professional and team/operational manager(s).
  • To work within the clinical governance framework as set out in Trust policy and guidance, contributing to the setting of objectives and implementation of action plans.
  • To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping and report writing in accordance with professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society and Trust policies and procedures.
  • To undertake specific administrative duties as required.
  • To perform other duties of a similar kind appropriate to the grade, which may be required from time to time by their manager and/or clinical supervisor.

The post holder is expected to comply with all relevant Trust & Team policies, procedures and guidelines, including those relating to Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety and Confidentiality of Information and clinical governance including research governance.

Person specification EDUCATION/QUALIFICATION
  • Doctoral level training in clinical/counselling psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS and registered with HCPC.
  • Allied health professional with evidence of recent and continuing post-registration professional education and training equivalent to post-graduate diploma level required for the professional's discipline.
  • Registered nurse with current registration.
  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
Experience
  • Experience of conducting autism assessments and working in autism services.
  • Experience of specialist assessment and treatment of clients across in neurodevelopmental or mental health services, and across a range of care settings, e.g. outpatient, community, primary care, and in-patient settings.
  • Experience of teaching training and/or supervision.
  • Trained in formal autism assessment tools (e.g., ADOS-2, ADI-R).
