Job overviewDue to current post-holders being successful in obtaining more senior positions, we are seeking two motivated, forward-thinking permanent full-time Band 6 speech and language therapists with strong interests in neuro-rehabilitation to join us at one of the UK's leading rehabilitation units.
The Regional Hyper-acute Rehabilitation Unit (RHRU) is a tertiary service which caters for adults with severe complex neurological disability, accepting referrals from Greater London, the South East and East of England. It is a highly specialised, level one rehabilitation service combining inpatient services (24 beds) with outreach support to community rehabilitation teams, nursing homes and other professionals across the network. A range of patients are treated at the RHRU, from people requiring high level cognitive and vocational rehabilitation to people who are in a prolonged disorder of consciousness (PDoC) or who are receiving neuropalliative care.
The RHRU is a centre of research and learning and the successful candidate will be able to participate in research and improvement activities, in-house and external training, regular supervision and competency development, and peer support networks.
Main duties of the jobYou will join a team of four qualified SLTs working within a large, supportive multidisciplinary team. There are opportunities to further develop skills in complex dysphagia, augmentative/alternative communication, tracheostomy management, prolonged disorders of consciousness, FEES, videofluroscopy and specialist neuropalliative care under the guidance of expert clinicians.
Person specification Knowledge & Experience- Post-qualification independent experience with a varied and complex adult neuro caseload in an acute/post-acute setting.
- Experience in assessment and management of neurological acquired communication and swallowing disorders.
- Experience in assessment, management and ongoing review of high or low-tech augmentative/alternative communication systems.
- Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
- Experience of tailoring practice to individual needs of patients, including issues relating to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
- Experience of working compassionately with carers, families, and friends in challenging situations to support patients' progress in rehabilitation.
- Knowledge of and experience in using formal and informal assessments for PDoC.
- Experience of being a keyworker.
- Experience of delivering group therapy.
- Knowledge of cognitive, emotional and behavioural consequences of brain injury & management approaches.
- Degree in Speech & Language Therapy/Pathology or equivalent.
- Registered with HCPC as a speech and language therapist.
- RCSLT Dysphagia Competency to Level C or equivalent.
- Membership of RCSLT.
- Level 2 VFSS competency.
- Core tracheostomy competencies.
- Foundational FEES competency.
