We need a Senior Project Manager as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting managers and staff across the Cancer Alliance, to drive forward the adoption of transformation and change to improve outcomes for patients and enable successful delivery of the ambitions of the Long-Term Plan for Cancer.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Project Manager, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting managers and staff across the Cancer Alliance, to drive forward the adoption of transformation and change to improve outcomes for patients. The post holder will support the Senior Programme Manager to deliver key projects in the NHS Long Term Plan and Cancer Alliance plan.

The role supports the business in driving transformation as well as value for money in planning, commissioning and service. The role is designed to build a combination of subject matter expertise and technical skills to develop a strong service delivery.

About us

There are 21 Cancer Alliances, responsible for leading the planning and delivery of cancer services and for leading work across their local system to: speed up cancer pathways, diagnose cancer earlier and improve survival, improve patient experience and quality of life, and reduce health inequalities in cancer services.

Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire Cancer Alliance (SWAG CA) constituent ICBs are Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG); Somerset; Gloucestershire; Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW).

SWAG CA is hosted by North Bristol NHS Trust for the purposes of formal employment and the provision of back-office support to the Cancer Alliance.

The post holder is hybrid working with a minimum of 40% office based within the SWAG CA geography.

The post holder will be required to travel across the South West.

Job responsibilities
  • Develop alliance wide transformation project plans that deliver transformation for patients.
  • Manage the delivery of complex projects including policy, strategy and implementation of governance and project controls.
  • Lead the delivery of project plans, allocating tasks as appropriate, identifying risks, issues and dependencies, consider best practice and options and ultimately making decisions in the best interest of the project.
  • Deliver a high standard of work ensuring projects are delivered on time, to a high standard and cost effectively.
  • Build internal and external relationships and work across organisational boundaries to ensure alignment with the Cancer Alliances objectives.
  • Pro-actively engage and manage stakeholders, so they are part of the design and delivery of cancer transformation projects. Respond to and resolve conflict if it arises.
  • Work with external consultancies working on other programs within other NHS directorates.
  • Operate effectively in a flexible and demanding environment.
  • Communicate and provide highly complex information to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. (Verbal, written and numerical)
Person Specification
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area.
  • Further training or significant experience to post-graduate diploma level in project management and/or healthcare quality improvement.
  • Experience of successful delivery of complex strategic healthcare projects working in partnership across organisational boundaries and to achieve results through others who may not be direct reports.
  • A proven track record of successful delivery of complex projects including supporting the implementation of strong governance, protocols, and project controls.
  • A proven track record of building internal and external relationships which deliver improvements and efficiencies and work across organisational boundaries.
  • Knowledge and experience of the national context and strategy for cancer.
  • Ability to effectively manage a number of assigned projects, within the agreed broad parameters, but making decisions routinely on own initiative.
  • Be a clear communicator with excellent written and presentation skills; capable of constructing and delivering clear ideas and concepts concisely and accurately to a diverse and varied range of audiences consisting of internal and external stakeholders.
