Job Description
Transport Technical Due Diligence Senior Consultant

Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

The Opportunity

Our award-winning Business and Investor Advisory (BIA) team has been recognised as European Technical Advisor of the Year for the last four years, and are looking to add to the Transport Technical Due Diligence team. The team works with investors in the transport sector to help understand and value businesses by assessing a range of complex technical and commercial issues. Pandemics, climate change, and technological development are key factors affecting the growth and development of successful transport infrastructure and investments.

Joining as a Senior Consultant will give you immediate exposure to a broad range of clients. This typically means working with infrastructure funds and other financial investors trading interests in infrastructure assets in the transport and wider infrastructure sector, where you will work alongside a group of technical specialists to help provide investor-focused advice on transactions.

Your role will be to quickly develop an understanding of the assets that our clients are assessing, provide a view on the company and the key technical risks and opportunities the company faces, and produce a business plan to inform the financial valuation of the investment. You may come from an engineering or related background but you should have an understanding of the purpose of technical due diligence, and an appreciation of the business of infrastructure developers and operators.

The role will require a mix of quantitative and qualitative analysis skills, and project activities could include:

  • Data review, information gathering and report writing
  • Review of operational and asset management practices
  • Assessment of the condition of infrastructure assets
  • Review of concession agreements and other construction and supplier contracts
  • Capital and operational cost review, benchmarking, and modelling in Excel

Our projects generally last between 4-6 weeks, meaning that in a year you can work on a number of different projects across a variety of sectors, assets and geographies, giving you exposure to different clients. Our projects are fast-paced and provide you with opportunities to learn and develop quickly. You will work closely with BIA team members as well as technical specialists across Arup globally. Given the nature of the job, you will interact directly with senior management from the target businesses and get exposure as to how these businesses operate whilst also gaining an understanding of what the key drivers are. Our role typically requires us to undertake site visits to the businesses in order to conduct a visual assessment on the assets as well as discuss the asset management strategy and potential technical risks with management - hence you will be given opportunities to travel within Europe and globally.

Is this role right for you?

We would like to speak with people who have:

  • Domain expertise in a transport sector, or subject matter expertise in a relevant skill such as cost modelling, or operations and asset management review, and demonstrated ability to apply this to due diligence projects
  • A technical understanding of transport and infrastructure assets and how they are developed, operated or managed.
  • Experience reviewing and navigating any of the following: financial models, opex/capex/lifecycle cost models, asset management processes and systems, or expertise in agreement/contract reviews.
  • Interest and proven capability in business development and client engagement.
  • A degree in civil engineering or other engineering disciplines is strongly preferred (however, economics, finance, business management, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience in these fields may be considered).
