Job Description
Breast Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist

The post holder will provide a high-quality Breast Specialist Nursing Service, working collaboratively within the Breast Senior Management Team and Band 8 to ensure the coordinated delivery of best practice in the care and management of patients diagnosed with breast cancer. This includes contributing to the strategic development of the breast cancer service.

As an autonomous specialist practitioner, you will deliver expert nursing care, ensuring clear communication and multidisciplinary management of Breast Cancer patients. You will offer clinical, informational, and emotional support to patients and other relevant individuals.

The role includes participation in teaching, research, and the development of evidence-based clinical practices in line with current research and guidelines. You will also provide leadership within the nursing team, acting as a mentor, supporting recruitment, appraisals, and professional development.

Additionally, you will assess symptoms, provide expert management, and support the Lead Breast Cancer Nurse and Clinical Service Lead in implementing service changes aligned with national cancer policy.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have shared leadership responsibilities across the Primary Breast Cancer Service and work in close liaison with Surgeons, Oncologists, Radiotherapy Team, Trials Teams, all with the support of the Lead Breast CNS.

The post holder will be an expert practitioner within the specialty and will primarily be supported to monitor and develop the Breast CNS Surgical Nursing Service and ensure patients receive sustainable, high quality, safe and effective individualized patient care, in accordance with national guidance and local policy, latest research and patient feedback.

The post holder will have the ability to manage complex clinical situations, providing guidance, supervision, and or training when appropriate to peers and junior members of staff and be actively involved in departmental education, audit and research.

Job responsibilities

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse RGN
  • Current NMC registration
  • Accredited post registration qualification in Breast cancer nursing or working towards
  • Evidence of masters level thinking study or working towards
  • Management and Leadership qualification
  • Degree in Nursing BSc
  • Non-medical Prescribing
  • Teaching qualification
Experience
  • Minimum of 4 years post registration
  • Minimum of 2 years experience at band 6
  • Significant relevant clinical experience within breast cancer speciality
  • Experience and knowledge of advanced practice and protocols
  • Evidence of undertaking audit or research project
Additional Criteria
  • Able to gain credibility with and influence colleagues including influencing clinical changes where appropriate
  • Strong organisational skills, prioritising complex situations
  • Ability to lead and influence change
  • Demonstrate ability to implement and utilise audit data to improve quality
