Job Description

Candidates are invited to apply for a Fellowship in advanced luminal endoscopy. The successful candidate will gain exposure to and receive training in a number of advanced luminal endoscopy techniques including UGI EMR and Barrett's radio-frequency ablation, colonic EMR and advanced polypectomy, balloon enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy. They will also gain experience in unit management and governance and will have the opportunity to participate in research. It is hoped the candidate will also develop their teaching skills during the placement.

The post will have 2 dedicated training lists per week and will include a service commitment of 5-6 lists per week of mixed endoscopy with flexible working to cover consultant leave and ward commitments. The post also includes responsibility for organization and running of the complex polyp MDT. Applicants should be at or near the end of their specialist training and independent in these activities. The candidate should be JAG signed off for standard therapeutics with audit data satisfying standard JAG auditable outcomes.

Candidates will also take part in the on-call GI bleeding rota with associated banding. Candidates must have full MRCP or equivalent. Applicants must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice (2013).

There will be the opportunity to attend 2 training lists per week in order to obtain experience in complex procedures e.g. UGI EUS, Barrett's RFA, Colorectal and UGI EMR and balloon enteroscopy. Candidates will also take part in the on-call GI bleeding rota with associated banding supplement.

Job responsibilities

Key areas of responsibilities

The post holder will work closely with other members of the team to ensure high quality luminal endoscopy and gastroenterology services within the strategic framework agreed by the team. They will work closely with the appropriate clinical management teams.

  1. The post holder will perform 5-6 luminal endoscopy sessions per week, mostly backfilling available slots in the endoscopy schedule.
  2. 2 teaching lists per week can be attended in order to obtain experience in complex procedures e.g. UGI EUS, Barrett's RFA, Colorectal and UGI EMR and balloon enteroscopy.
  3. Attend the UGI and LGI MDT.
  4. Contribute to service governance and the clinical management of endoscopy.
  5. Participate in the teaching and training of undergraduates and junior medical staff.
  6. Participate in ongoing research within the department.
  7. Commitment to the out-of-hours endoscopy service at either SpR or Consultant level dependent on the seniority of the postholder.
  8. Support the junior clinical team and nurses with decision making.
  9. Clinical efficiency e.g. length of stay reductions, reducing cancelled procedures and DNA rates.
  10. Quality outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates.
  11. Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes; participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.
  12. Operational efficiency e.g. day case rates, waiting list activity and demand management.
  13. Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and ensure resulting actions are implemented.
  14. Work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and services developments as delegated by the Divisional management team.
  15. Ensure NICE clinical requirements are reviewed, implemented and monitored.
  16. Ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • GMC registered Medical Practitioner
  • GMC specialist registration or within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC's specialist register
  • Appropriate Royal College Membership
  • M.Sc
  • Higher research degree
Language
  • Are able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfill the job requirements
Academic achievements including research/publications
  • Demonstrable interest in clinical research
Audit
  • Understanding of principles of clinical audit
  • Experience of leading audits
Teaching & Training
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates / postgraduates and junior medical staff
  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues
Knowledge/Skills
  • SpR in Gastroenterology or gastrointestinal surgery
  • Independent practice in luminal endoscopy (including therapies) by JAG criteria
  • IT Skills and computer literacy

Depending on experience £41,750 - £64,288 per annum + 1B banding (40%) + Ldn Weighting
