Job Description

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) seeks a senior Clinical Fellow in Pleural Disease to work within a busy and successful pleural disease service launched in 2007.

The post involves overseeing currently ongoing clinical trials and provides intensive clinical experience in managing pleural disease. It can be tailored to suit the successful candidate as a post-CCT Fellowship or as an OOPE.

The post provides valuable opportunities for hands-on involvement in service development, including the development of tertiary-secondary care partnerships, with appropriate support. It will therefore suit SpRs with a dedicated interest in pleural disease training and planned sub-specialisation at Consultant level.

Main duties of the job

This is an excellent opportunity to join a first-class team in an active and progressive central London teaching hospital environment. The job will include:

  1. Overseeing clinical trials
  2. Database management
  3. Data analysis
  4. One pleural clinic per week
  5. Pleural interventions
  6. Thoracic ultrasound imaging
Job responsibilities

The post involves intensive clinical and procedural experience in managing pleural disease. The post holder also oversees ongoing clinical trials. It can be tailored to suit the successful candidate as a post-CCT Fellowship or as an OOPE. The post holder will have the opportunity to develop their teaching skills by supporting our Simulation centre and residents with a weekly training list.

The multidisciplinary service brings together three consultants with a special interest in pleural disease (two respiratory physicians and one Consultant Thoracic Surgeon). The service is further supported by excellent radiology and histopathology departments. We run five-day-a-week pleural lists, one joint physician/surgical pleural disease clinic, and thoracoscopy lists. The service is supported by a weekly MDM.

Person Specification Professional Qualifications
  • Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practise
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • National training number to work in the UK as at the level of a Specialist Registrar to attain CCT in Respiratory & General Internal Medicine OR already on GMC Specialist Register
  • BSc or equivalent
Clinical Experience
  • Respiratory experience as a specialist registrar
  • Previous experience in pleural disease as a specialist registrar
Clinical Skills
  • Basic ultrasound knowledge and familiarity with chest x-ray, CT scan and interpretation in the context of pleural disease
  • Understanding of appropriate palliative care management strategies
  • BTS Primary Operatory, level 4 or above.
Audit Management & IT
  • Understanding of principles of audit
  • Interpretation of clinical governance
Research, Teaching skill & experience
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates, and junior medical staff
  • Evidence of research interest
  • Proven record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Successful applicant on peer-reviewed research grants
  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.
  • Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
  • Able to change and adapt, respond to changing circumstances and to cope with setbacks or pressure.
  • Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience and ability to work co-operatively with others.
