Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist within Collingham Child and Family Centre. This is a friendly, ever-growing team consisting of several exciting disciplines and expertise.

You will provide senior nurse leadership within the nursing team. As post holder and in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, you will take a senior role in the processing of all new referrals to the service and facilitating gatekeeping and discharge. You will assess, plan, and provide supportive clinical management, using evidence-based models of care and support of families.

You will also liaise with referrers and provide advice to primary and secondary services and other external agencies as required.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will play a key leadership role in ensuring high-quality care for young people with complex mental health needs. This role involves leading referral management, supervising junior nurses, role-modeling clinical excellence, and coordinating Care, Education, and Treatment Reviews (CETRs). You will provide senior nursing support and supervision to the liaison team in collaboration with the manager and peers. You will also contribute to the wider nursing initiative of the service.

The role will be between Monday - Friday with one clinical shift per week.

There is an exciting opportunity within this role to work collaboratively with our colleagues at GOSH Mildred Creak Unit.

You will work within the multidisciplinary team, collaborating with Doctors, Psychologists, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Family Therapists, Dietician and Speech and Language Therapist. In addition, you will liaise with Community Mental Health Teams, Primary Care Teams, and Medical and Psychiatric Wards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • To lead on and co-ordinate the processing of all new referrals including gatekeeping assessments and pre-admission work.
  • To provide an assessment of complex referrals and to provide advice to referring agents on how to access services.
  • To work with families as appropriate.
  • To provide consultation and advice to referrers; children & young people and their families.
  • To provide effective nurse leadership, expertise, advice and support to the team and ensure the provision of high-quality care to patients.
  • To act as a role model and highly competent practitioner.
  • To provide supervision shared with the ward manager.
  • To lead on ensuring CETRs are done timely and effectively.
  • To contribute to the continued development of the treatment pathway from the point of referral through to discharge.
  • To promote an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence-based practice.
Person specification Education & Qualifications
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse Current full NMC Registration
  • Evidence of CPD including completion of courses with a focus on leadership.
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse at degree or diploma level.
  • Post graduate qualification degree or extensive experience of mental health nursing.
  • Leadership and management training.
Experience
  • Proven experience of working in an inpatient health care setting providing clinical leadership to lower banding staff.
  • Evidence of working with students and learners in practice.
  • Experience in a leadership, teaching, or mentorship role, ideally within CAMHS or similar services.
  • Experience of managing and supervising others in a performance management context including appraisals.
  • Significant experience of working within CAMHS or with children and young people.
  • Experience working in an inpatient CAMHS setting.
  • Experience in quality improvement initiatives or clinical audits in mental health settings.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, delivering, and evaluating training or education programs for healthcare professionals.
  • Relevant clinical or teaching experience in CAMHS.
  • Evidence of participating in QI projects or training in QI.
  • Experience in leading or facilitating group workshops or educational events.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of mental health problems, child development, mental health law and legislation and the nursing process.
  • Understanding of professional and current issues in children's and mental health nursing.
  • Knowledge of child protection and fundamental safeguarding principles.
  • Understanding or evidence of fulfilling PREP requirements for Revalidation.
  • Strong clinical knowledge and understanding of mental health issues in children and adolescents, including risk assessment, care planning, and interventions.
  • Ability to deliver from a range of key therapeutic interventions including CBT, DBT, Psychosocial interventions and Family interventions.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate education and training programs tailored to the needs of nursing staff and other professionals.
  • Ability to deliver clinical supervision and mentoring to nursing staff, promoting professional development and reflective practice.
  • Ability to understand and work with challenging behaviour.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with children, young people and their parents.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with staff, service users, and families.
