Clinical Nurse Specialist Hepatocellular Cancer (HCC)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Hepatology nurse to join the Hepatology team at The Royal Surrey County Hospital. This is a great opportunity to be part of a friendly, dynamic, and forward-thinking team specialising in the treatment and holistic care of patients with Liver disease and HCC across the Cancer Alliance in Surrey, Hampshire and the South Coast.

The successful candidate will take the nursing lead in coordinating the management of patients with HCC. You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide seamless care and support to this patient group.

You must be a team player but also confident working autonomously and managing a patient case load locally and regionally. You must be well organised, have excellent time management skills. You will need advanced interpersonal skills to communicate with a wide range of internal and external agencies, to educate other health care professionals and to provide support to patients and their relatives.

Main duties of the job

To work as an autonomous Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist within the Hepatology service specialising in liver disease particularly hepatocellular carcinoma, providing expert and complex care advice, clinical care, education, advice and support for individuals and their carers through the development and provision of nurse led clinics, a designated telephone support line and the training of nursing and medical staff.

By working collaboratively within multi-professional teams, the Nurse Specialist will maintain effective communication systems especially with all other healthcare staff within the Trust responsible for the care of Hepatology, delivering timely and appropriate information in line with current best practice.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work autonomously within the multi-disciplinary team assisting the Hepatology and Gastroenterology Consultants in Inpatient and Outpatient management of patients with Hepatocellular Cancer (HCC). The post holder will have responsibility for the assessment, planning and organisation of a broad range of activities and programmes of care, and the development, implementation and evaluation of individualised care needs.

The post holder will lead on clinical audit in this specialised area, ensuring development and progression of practices and guidelines within this environment. The post holder will be accountable for their nursing practices delivered to the patient and will be responsible for their own professional development, adhering to the policies and protocol of the Trust and the regulatory body for the nurse (NMC).

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse Part 1 or 12
  • Educated to post qualification level or equivalent experience in acute setting
  • Evidence of contentious professional development
  • Teaching qualification ENB 998 or City & Guilds 730 or equivalent
  • First degree or willingness to undertake
  • Nurse prescriber
Knowledge and Skills
  • Experience of Gastroenterology/Hepatology Nursing at band 5 or above
  • Can demonstrate up-to-date clinical credibility / competence
  • Knowledge of clinical governance issues such as complaints handling, clinical risk management.
  • Evidence of research based practice
  • Clinical audit
  • Evidence in changing practice and project management
