An exciting opportunity has become available for Consultant Anaesthetists to join our dynamic and expanding team. This full-time, substantive role will contribute to anaesthetic services across both sites, supporting the growth of the department and the establishment of the Southeast London Lewisham Surgical Centre (LSC). The position reflects the evolving needs of the service, with an updated job plan that includes considerations for staff wellbeing and a focus on comprehensive patient care. The role will require both daytime and weekend clinical care across the two hospitals, with an annualised commitment based on the sessions worked.
The full-time position includes 10 Programmed Activities (PA), divided into 7.5 PA for direct clinical care (DCC) and 2.5 PA for supporting professional activities (SPA). Hybrid job plans will also be available for existing and potentially new appointees who wish to undertake non-surgical centre ENT activity, such as Paediatric ENT or other specialties. This role offers an opportunity to be part of a team at a Trust that has recently been recognized by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCOA) for meeting Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) standards. This accreditation highlights the Trust's commitment to ensuring that their anaesthetic services meet national guidelines and undergo regular reviews to maintain high-quality care. Main duties of the job
- Participate in the professional supervision, management, support and teaching of Anaesthetic trainees.
- Be familiar with the Royal College of Anaesthetists' curriculum for Junior Doctor training, and contribute to their training requirements, including tutorials and educational supervision.
- Organise and participate in teaching sessions for undergraduate students and post-graduate medical staff and other health professionals.
- Participate fully in Clinical Governance, including reporting of incidents, investigation of serious incidents, and the effective handling of any complaints.
- Participate in the Clinical Audit programme of the department.
- Comply with the Trust's Clinical Governance processes as stipulated by the Divisional and Medical Directors.
- The post holder is responsible for data quality and complying with the policies, procedures and accountability arrangements throughout the Trust for maintaining accuracy and probity in the recording of the Trust's activities.
- Improving representation at senior levels of staff with disabilities, from black, Asian, and ethnic minorities background, identify as LGBTQ+ and women, through improved recruitment and leadership development.
- Widening access (anchor institution) and employability.
- Improving the experience of staff with disability.
- Improving the EDI literacy and confidence of trust staff through training and development.
- Making equalities mainstream.
- Participate in the provision of a safe, effective and efficient Anaesthetic service, and with the proper functioning of the Anaesthetic Department. This will include some flexibility of fixed commitments.
- Participate in the anaesthetic consultant on call rota.
- Be prepared to work on both sites of the Trust. Although on call duties will be undertaken solely at one of the two sites, some elective theatre sessions do occur cross site when necessary.
- Assist when required in the provision of Critical Care services.

- Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level.
- Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice.
- Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy, and meet the requirements for revalidation.
- Demonstrate willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
- Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols.
- Review and develop policies for clinical practice and effectiveness.
- Support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.
- Participate in all aspects of the Directorate and Hospitals affairs, including attendance at relevant Consultant and Directorate meetings and to represent the department on appropriate committees/working parties when required.
- Monitor, with appropriate managers, performance indicators for the service, and implement action as necessary.
- Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent.
- Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent.
- Full and Specialist registration for Anaesthesia (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
- Applicants that are UK trained, must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Applicants that are non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT and be on the GMC Specialist Register/Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) application in a non-CCT specialty awaiting approval.
- Higher degree or qualification such as MSc or PhD.
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Anaesthesia (or equivalent).
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of adult, maternity and paediatric patients.
- ALS, ATLS provider.
- Evidence of extended period of additional subspecialty training in a tertiary centre. Broad experience of working within the NHS.
- Experience of teaching and training of undergraduates, medical and allied health professionals.
- Ability to teach clinical skills to anaesthetic trainees of all levels, and achieving GMC standards to be recognised as a clinical supervisor.
- Evidence of formal experience in medical education including regional/national teaching. Higher teaching qualification.
- An understanding of current issues in medical education and training. Evidence of achieving GMC standards to be recognised as an educational supervisor.
- ALS/ATLS instructor, and PALS or APLS provider or instructor.
- Understand the principles of Clinical Audit.
- Evidence of participation in audit projects with specific relevance to subspecialty interest.
- Regular commitment to relevant Continuing Medical Education.
- Understanding of research principles and scientific method.
- Evidence of reflective practice.
- Awareness of the current organisation of the Trust and the NHS, and the proposed changes to the service.
- Evidence of implementing evidence-based change to improve patient care.
- Significant involvement in clinical research.
- Presentations at regional and national meetings.
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Evidence of involvement and/or experience in risk processes such as Serious Incident reviews and patient safety systems.
- Understands the management structure of the NHS. Evidence of risk management.
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and contribute to departmental strategy.
- Experience in mentoring junior colleagues and fostering professional growth.
- Participation in service development and improvement projects.
- Evidence of leading quality improvement initiatives within the NHS or equivalent healthcare system.
