Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Perioperative Medicine Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Anaesthesia with a special interest in Perioperative medicine at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH). 10 Programmed Activities will be offered - 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (which includes 0.5 PA for oncall) and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities. The specific job plan will be developed in partnership between the needs of the department and the successful applicant. It is expected that the initial job plan will be reviewed after 6 months of service. Initial job plan will include sessions within all major units at the RNOH including the peripheral nerve injury unit, sarcoma unit, joint replacement unit, spinal unit, shoulder unit, foot & ankle unit, and anaesthetic pre-assessment clinic. Candidates must be able to demonstrate clinical experience at either fellowship or consultant level for perioperative medicine, including anaesthesia for complex orthopaedic and complex spinal deformity surgery. Job plans may be changed to accommodate where possible the specific requests of the candidate and the needs of the department. Currently, the Trust permits flexibility in time and space to accommodate SPAs.

Main duties of the job

The post will be based at the Stanmore site in Middlesex.

Non-fixed commitments include:

  1. To join the team of consultant anaesthetists who provide anaesthesia at RNOH.
  2. To provide pre and post-operative care.
  3. To participate in the teaching of trainee anaesthetists.
  4. To participate in postgraduate academic meetings of the anaesthetic department and departmental audit.
  5. To attend consultant administrative departmental meetings.
  6. To undertake audit of personal practice.
  7. To improve service delivery and participate with clinical governance in line with local and national guidelines.
  8. To undertake research.

The RNOH is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK and is regarded as a leader in the field of orthopaedics both nationally and internationally. In 2023, the trust was ranked the top UK orthopaedic hospital in the Newsweek global poll of specialised hospitals and is one of only 6 European centres in the top 20.

We provide a comprehensive range of neuro-musculoskeletal health care, from acute spinal injury and complex bone tumors to Orthopaedic medicine and specialist rehabilitation for chronic pain sufferers. There is also a dedicated Spinal Cord Injury Centre.

There are 200 in-patient beds on the main site, including 30 paediatric beds. The trust runs 14 dedicated theatres including a new 4 operating room theatre complex that opened in October 203. The ASPIRE Centre opened on the RNOH site in 1998, built with a National Lottery grant this houses facilities such as swimming pool, gym, Badminton courts and a dance studio, used by able-bodied and disabled patrons; staff may also use the facilities.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • FRCA or GMC recognised equivalent qualification
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry on GMC specialist register with CCT or equivalent (proposed CCT/CESR date must be within 6 months of interview)
  • ALS
  • Basic medical qualifications - MBBS or equivalent
  • APLS/EPLS
  • Additional professional qualification eg MRCPHCH or MRCP
  • Evidence of a teaching qualification
Knowledge
  • Evidence of understanding the importance of GMC good medical practice and appraisal and revalidation.
Other Requirements
  • Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection Accountability - Takes responsibility for own actions and promotes good team working
  • Commitment to own continued professional development and that of others
Skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Competent in all aspects of skills appropriate to the role.

  • Experience in effectively delivering training / teaching nursing and medical staff
  • Experience in conflict management and able to motivate colleagues (medical and non-medical)
Education, Qualifications and Training
  • Experience in anaesthesia for specialist complex orthopaedic surgery
  • Experience of Anaesthesia for spinal deformity
  • Management experience - e.g. rota/leave coordinator
  • Additional professional qualification e.g. MRCPCH or MRCP
Quality Improvement
  • Knowledge and experience of Quality Improvement (QI) methodology / audit / service improvement work
