Job Overview
Applications are invited for this post based at the Wrexham Maelor District General Hospital. The appointee will make up a team of 6 Consultant Cardiologists. This post has arisen from plans to reconfigure and strengthen our existing services. We are particularly seeking to strengthen our already well-developed services in cardiovascular imaging and heart failure services. Expertise in either of these areas would be particularly welcome. However, other subspecialty interests would also be considered, and we would like to emphasize that the indicative Job Plan can be modified to suit the successful applicant.
The Hospital is superbly located in North Wales, with easy access to the North Wales coastline, Snowdonia National Park, Liverpool, and Manchester.
You are required to be on the Specialist Register, have CCT or recognized equivalent, or be within 6 months of obtaining it at the time of interview.
The successful candidate will be appointed in accordance with the national Consultant Contract in Wales with a current salary range for 10 sessions of £106,000 to £154,760 per annum.
Main duties of the job
Together with the other consultant cardiology staff, the post holder will provide the following:
- A comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cardiology service supported by other members of the department.
- Non-invasive cardiology.
- Local and regional heart failure service.
- Local and regional cardiology service management development in collaboration with the BCUHB Cardiology Strategic Board.
- Professional supervision and teaching of junior medical staff.
- Contributions to local undergraduate and postgraduate activity.
- Participation in clinical audit, continuing professional development, and clinical governance activities on a local, Health Board, and All Wales basis.
- Development of research and professional interests.
- Adhere to the BCUHB policies and guidelines.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Qualification.
- GMC full registration.
- CCT in Cardiology or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC).
- MRCP or equivalent.
- Completed and signed off sub-specialty training curriculum Heart failure and imaging.
- To have obtained British Society of Echocardiography Accreditation or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree.
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of substantial training in acute and general cardiology.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for all general cardiology patients.
- Written record on training and experience in all aspects of heart failure.
- Written record on training and experience in all aspects of pacing and advanced device implantation and follow-up.
Desirable criteria
- Heart failure or Imaging Fellowship.
Management and Administrative Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the Cardiology Service.
- Ability to innovate and introduce modern working practices.
- Ability to work effectively with and influence medical colleagues.
- Ability and willingness to work within the Health Board and NHS performance framework and targets.
- Familiarity with NHS and Welsh health service.
Desirable criteria
- Management Experience.
Teaching Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in teaching and training.
- Undergraduate teaching experience.
Desirable criteria
- A postgraduate qualification in Medical education.
Research/Audit Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of research in cardiology.
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
- Completed audit of clinical work.
Desirable criteria
- Peer-reviewed publications.
- Ongoing research interest.
- Successful research grant applications.
