Consultant HPB Radiologist

Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) and Diagnostic Radiology - Applicants are invited to apply for this post supporting the delivery of HPB and Diagnostic Imaging. The successful candidate will have experience to shape HPB Imaging and support the clinical team in developing the HPB oncology and transplant services. In addition, they should have experience in reporting a variety of oncological and body cross-sectional studies. They should have a proven track record in ability to lead radiology at MDT. They should contribute flexibly to support the delivery of the acute radiology and on-call service which may involve cross-site commitments.

Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.
Main duties of the jobHPB and Diagnostic Radiology - You will be required to provide an expert opinion in HPB Imaging and contribute to the delivery of acute and outpatient imaging services. The Trust provides a huge variety of specialist diagnostic services. At the Freeman Hospital, we provide the imaging and intervention to Northern Cancer Care Centre, HPB and Hepatology, Urology, Cardiothoracics ENT and the Institute of Transplantation. Other specialist services include sarcoma, neuroendocrine tumour and intestinal failure. At the RVI, there is the Emergency Department and Major Trauma Centre with acute admission of a huge variety of medical and surgical patients and numerous specialist wards including Upper GI surgery, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Respiratory, Gastroenterology and Immunology. Colorectal services are provided on both sites. A successful candidate would contribute to the on-call service which may be on either site. There is the opportunity for reporting from home through negotiation at job planning.

Job responsibilitiesClinical:
- Support clinical teams in delivering the benign and malignant HPB service through reporting, MDT activity and pathway optimisation.
- Deliver reporting in a wider range of acute and outpatient examinations.
- Contribute to general radiology generated cross site in Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
- Take part in the general On Call rota. Depending on rota frequency, this could be either at Freeman Hospital or RVI.
Administrative:
- Ensure appropriate management for patients in your care.
- Contribute to the efficient and effective running of the department.
- Support initiatives to improve service quality, patient pathways and manage waiting time targets within the Directorate and the Trust, as well as the wider Health community.
Research:
- The Trust welcomes and encourages research as a high profile activity that compliments the service provided, the emphasis being on studies that fall within the National Institute of Health Research Portfolio.
- Time for research is included in the SPA allowance.
Teaching:
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Support the training of other healthcare professionals within the organisation.
- Active involvement in the clinical supervision of Radiology Registrars in the department.
Flexibility:
In line with the Trust's core value of placing patients at the heart of everything we do, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to the needs of our patients. To meet those needs some staff groups will be increasingly asked to work a more flexible work pattern so that they can offer services in the evening or weekend. As a result any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern or working in the future if required, including evening and weekend work.
Person Specification Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC Registration.
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) or equivalent.
- Higher Degree.
- Special skills training in the specialty.
- Evidence of experience in the specialty.
- Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty.
- Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality.
- Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.
- Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
- Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
- An understanding of Clinical Governance.
- Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
- Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.
- Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
- Evidence of leadership / project management.
- Evidence of having implemented change.
- Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.
- Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
- Postgraduate qualification in medical education.
- Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
- Research/critical review of literature.
- Publications in the last five years.
- Evidence of participation in audit.
- Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit.
- Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
