Job Description
Consultant in Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgery Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon designed to complement and develop hand surgery in Cardiff.

The appointee will be based across all three hospital sites within the Health Board and will be a member of the Trauma & Orthopaedic Directorate, joining the existing hand surgery and wider multidisciplinary team and undertake all clinical duties in conjunction with Consultant colleagues.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has one of the busiest Trauma and Orthopaedic units in the UK and is the Major Trauma Centre for South Wales. There are separate trauma and elective services. Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £106,000 per annum to £154,760 per annum.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work as part of the Hand Team for the management of hand and wrist specialist trauma. The dedicated hand trauma on-calls run as a 1:4 including paediatric hand trauma and covering hand and wrist injuries as part of the Major Trauma Centre. As part of the hand team you would not be part of the general orthopaedic on call rota. Electively, the post holder will work with the rest of the hand team managing both local referrals and tertiary referrals from other centres around South Wales.

There is a strong teaching tradition both for undergraduates and postgraduates and there are good research links with the University of Wales. Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University's School of Medicine will be expected.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
