Consultant in Paediatric Surgery

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest and busiest paediatric surgical units in the country. The appointee will help deliver the provision of general paediatric surgery to children at RMCH, Wythenshawe and Lancaster General Infirmary. There will also be the opportunity to help develop the existing multidisciplinary vascular malformation service alongside Ms O'Shea. The department encourages collaborative working, and any applicant will be expected to share our strong team ethic.
The Department of Paediatric Surgery is the specialist children's surgery centre in North West England including Neonatal, Oncological, Thoracic, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and specialist day-case surgery, and the surgery of intestinal failure and short bowel; supra-regional service supporting exstrophy, hyperinsulinaemia of the New-born, Metabolic disorders.
The department has a recent history of providing high quality training for all members of the department as reflected in the GMC Trainee Survey results. We have a full and varied educational programme every Monday morning that is protected time.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder will provide emergency paediatric and neonatal surgery as part of a hot-week system with 1 in 12 prospective on call cover. There is a separate TOF rota covered by three consultants and a daytime lower GI rota covered by four consultants. There is no cross cover of the Paediatric Urology rota at consultant level.
The appointee will be contracted for eleven and a half programmed activities per week, and these will be fixed within the department job plan; part time applicants will be welcomed.
The appointee would be expected to cover for colleagues on annual and study leave as well as short term sick leave. The consultant will provide continuing responsibility for patients in their charge in line with established hospital procedures.

Person Specification Qualifications and Training- MBChB or equivalent
- Completion of general professional training
- Evidence of subspecialty training in the management of vascular malformations
- MD, PhD or other higher degree
- Teaching medical students
- Teaching junior medical staff
- Experience of Audit
- Full registration with the GMC and licenced to practice
- Registered on the GMC Specialist Register (or be within 6 months of CCT date from the date of interview)
- Publication in peer reviewed journals or demonstrate commitment to developing research in paediatric surgery and oncology surgery
- Ability to work harmoniously in a multi-disciplinary team
