Job overview An opportunity has arisen for a substantive LTFT post as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (Prosthodontics) based at Birmingham Dental Hospital.

The hospital specialty of Restorative Dentistry is based at Birmingham Dental Hospital within the Dental Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful post holder will be required to deliver Restorative Dentistry services predominantly within the area of Fixed and Removable prosthodontics. The incumbent of this post will be expected to support and develop services in Prosthodontics. It is expected the incumbent will assist with the leadership of the NHS Prosthodontic service in line with current commissioning standards. This would be planned to address the particular interests or skills of the post-holder and also to address service needs. This evolution will be planned in association with the Heads of the Prosthodontic and Restorative Services and working in partnership with the University of Birmingham.

Main duties of the job The post holder will be involved in new patient consultant led diagnostic and treatment planning clinics. They will continue to support a joint service with the oral medicine department, running regular joint clinics (1:6 weeks). They will also manage a number of specialist restorative cases which are currently under treatment at the Dental Hospital.

Bearing in mind the training needs of patients within the service the post holder will work with the team to allocate and support patient management by undergraduate / postgraduate trainees and will undertake their own clinical sessions managing patients requiring consultant care.

The post holder will initially be responsible to the Divisional Medical Director, Dental Services. There will be opportunity for a joint head of service role within Prosthodontics.

There will be no on-call commitment.

Working for our organisation The Birmingham Dental Hospital is an undergraduate dental teaching hospital that shares purpose-built accommodation with the School of Dentistry of the University of Birmingham. It is sited in a purpose-built building at Pebble Mill in Edgbaston. The Dental Hospital provides an outpatient and day case service with approximately 115,000 patient attendances per annum.

All dental specialties are represented within the hospital building by Consultant clinics and/or university teaching departments. Excellent liaison exists with clinical and laboratory departments associated with the main medical teaching hospitals in Birmingham. A comprehensive range of investigative and report services are available.

Birmingham Dental Hospital forms part of the Dental Services Directorate which is integrated with the Community Services within the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is currently one of the largest Community Trusts in the country and incorporates significant elements-both within Community and Specialist Services (including Birmingham Dental Hospital). Following a period of autonomous operation, the Trust has achieved Foundation Trust status as one of the first Community Foundation Trusts.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities The successful post-holder will be expected to contribute to the triaging of referrals and clinical assessment of referred patients. Some patients will be managed by developing and communicating a treatment plan which can be delivered by the referring primary care dental practitioner.

The Consultant will be involved, as appropriate, in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education, in addition to the training of Resident hospital staff and will contribute to the training programme for Specialist Registrars and DCTS. There are a number of full and part-time junior NHS and academic clinical staff in resident grades who are involved in both clinical service and teaching of undergraduates and postgraduate students.

The post holder will be expected to give advice and assistance to members of the Resident staff and Specialty Dentists within the Department as the need arises.

As a teaching unit, Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry undertake a wide range of research activities for which excellent facilities are available. The duties of this post are primarily of a service nature and as such, no specific requirement to pursue research is included. An interested appointee, however, will be encouraged to pursue his or her interests, subject to the needs of the service and may be asked to participate in established clinical trial activities subject to appropriate training.

The department has an International Reputation with regards to research and scholarly activity. Membership of the BSSPD (British Prosthodontic Society) and attendance at the annual conference is encouraged, as is membership of the Consultants in Restorative dentistry group.

Full participation in Hospital/Departmental Quality Assurance, Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance programmes will be a requirement of the post. Governance meetings are held with the Restorative dental team.

The post holder will be subject to annual consultant appraisal.

So far as is consistent with proper discharge of the above duties, the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties during occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Person specification
  • Holding or eligible for full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) of the United Kingdom.
  • On the GDC Restorative Dentistry Specialist List or eligible for inclusion on this within six months of the interview date (e.g. via a Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training or a successful GDC assessed application).
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship exit examination in Restorative Dentistry or equivalent i.e. possession of a CCST in Restorative Dentistry.
  • On the GDC specialist list for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics.
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery, FDS, or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, MJDF or equivalent.
  • Applicants who are Nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 years minimum training period in the National Health Service for Restorative Dentistry.
  • Higher degree i.e. MSc/PhD or equivalent.
  • Interest and experience in the broad range of Restorative Dentistry.
Experience
  • Extensive experience in the delivery of consultant-led Restorative/Prosthodontic services.
  • Extensive experience in the teaching/training and supervision of junior staff and dentists or doctors in training.
  • Experience of running/co-ordinating multi-disciplinary team care.
Teaching
  • Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching in Restorative Dentistry/Prosthodontics or allied subjects.
  • Teaching skills qualification such as FHEA or PGCert in medical education.
Audit & Research
  • Evidence of effective participation in Clinical Audit.
  • Evidence of research relevant to the specialty.
  • Ability to critically appraise scientific literature.
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals.
Management
  • Evidence of leadership skills.
