Job overviewAn opportunity has arisen for full-time Consultant in Rheumatology and General Internal Medicine within a growing, dynamic and forward thinking Rheumatology department at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, part of the Chelsea & Westminster Foundation Trust. The candidate will join a faculty which currently consists of 4 Consultants, an Associate Specialist, a Specialty Doctor and a Specialist Registrar, working with a multidisciplinary team at the Chelsea & Westminster site. The appointed individual is expected to uphold the Trust values to ensure the delivery of the highest quality care to patients.
Applicants must be on the Specialist Registers for Rheumatology and General Internal Medicine, or within six months of being admitted to the Registers if they are trainees currently in a training programme within the UK.
Any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Main duties of the jobFour full outpatient clinics each week and one short outpatient clinic each week. There are nurse led clinics including for patient education and disease modifying drug monitoring to support the outpatient service. There is a pharmacist prescriber to support prescription of DMARD drugs. There is an Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner providing a weekly Spondyloarthritis clinic within the Rheumatology Outpatients.
Rheumatology patients are admitted under the medical teams, with appropriate input provided from the Rheumatology SPR and Consultants. Rheumatology SPR and Consultants also provide advice around management of rheumatology-related problems in other patients on request, including patients on the Ambulatory & Emergency Care Unit as well as wards.
Attendance with appropriate contribution is expected at the radiology/rheumatology MDT, attended by specialist musculoskeletal consultant radiologists and trainees, and at the fortnightly Complex Rheumatology/Connective Tissue Disease/Vasculitis meetings.
Attendance with appropriate contribution is expected at the weekly Grand Round and Rheumatology Academic Meetings, as part of CPD. Attendance with appropriate contribution is expected at Governance Meetings.
Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesThe post holder will:
- Participate in, and provide committed Rheumatology outpatient care, and inpatient support.
- Participate in the GIM (General Medical) rota for the hospital.
- Facilitate access to a full range of inpatient and outpatient Rheumatology services.
- Be expected to cover for absent Consultant colleagues to allow for annual and study leave.
- Make collaboration between hospital and community services as efficient as possible, supporting discharge from hospital where appropriate and ensuring appropriate follow up arrangements.
- Provide peer group support, supervision, further education and professional development essential to the welfare and effectiveness of trainees in Rheumatology, General Internal Medicine and the allied professions.
- Be educationally responsible for supporting training and appraisal of junior staff.
- Demonstrate a continuing commitment to medical audit and service development in Rheumatology.
- Demonstrate commitment to engagement in clinical trials in Rheumatology as opportunities arise.
- Develop communication and other non-clinical aspects of Rheumatology services.
- Actively participate in undergraduate teaching of clinical medical students attached to the department.
- CCT (or within 6 months of CCT) or on the Specialist Register. The candidate should be accredited in both General Medicine and Rheumatology.
- MRCP or equivalent.
- Higher degree e.g. PhD or MD.
- Evidence of broad based training experience in Rheumatology equivalent to that required for a UK CCST.
- Teaching experience / willingness to teach medical, nursing & other staff.
- Experience of audit / clinical research.
- Understanding of the NHS and its organisation.
- Completed publications in appropriate journal(s).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to lead a team.
- Commitment to work with other consultants and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Willingness and ability to participate in the on-call rota.
